GADGETS | Braven 105 Active Portable Bluetooth Speaker Review

Braven 105 waterproof speakerWhat is it?

Braven 105 Active Waterproof Speaker
Amazon.co.uk for £44.99

  • Rechargeable Bluetooth speaker
  • Internal HD driver
  • 8 hours of playback
  • IP67 waterproof
  • Speakerphone
  • Shockproof
  • 800MAH internal battery
  • 1 year warranty

What did we think?

Inside the box you’ll find the speaker, a tiny little micro USB charging cable, instruction booklet and a stand. Pairing the Braven 105 speaker with my phone was super easy. I turned on Bluetooth, it popped up in my device list on my phone and paired, taking no more than a few seconds to complete.

The speaker is idiot-proof and very intuitive to use with big rubbersied buttons on the side. There’s an elastic loop attached to the speaker which makes it easy to attach to things should you feel the need to. I prefer to use it with the supplied stand though (see the pic below) and whilst it’s all very well made and feels like a quality little bit of tech, I do find the stand a bit fiddly, so have taken to leaving it attached to the stand.

The stand that comes with the Braven 105 speaker

Audio in and micro USB sockets on the back of the speaker

On the back of the speaker there’s a flap which protects the micro USB and audio jack inputs. As with the bigger Braven 405 which we absolutely love, the sound quality is good, though with it’s diminished size and at this price point, the sound isn’t outstanding, but the sound is clear and impressive for its size.

Braven 105 waterproof speaker

This is a great little speaker with decent given it’s so small. I love the fact that’s its both rechargeable and waterproof, making it really handy for camping, and I love the stand that comes with it despite it being a little fiddly to get on and of it. If you’re looking for a good quality Bluetooth speaker for outdoor sports, camping and/or travel, then the Braven 105 is great buy!

WELLBEING | Changes, Pledges & Plans Guaranteed To Chase Away The January Blues

January is a bit of a grim month, and whilst there’s a glimmer of hope with the days gradually getting longer and the first early glimpses of spring emerging from the ground, it can feel like a bit of a slog.

Instead of slumping in front of the TV binge watching box sets, now is the perfect time to make meaningful plans that will give you something positive to focus on and will galavanise you into action.

exciting plans for new year

1. Learn something new about the natural world

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to be able to indetify the birds that visit your garden, the trees you walk past on your way to work or the constellations in the night sky?

Whilst learning the names of an entire genus isn’t a fast process, it’s making a start is that matters, so whatever it is, make a pledge to yourself that this year you’ll stop putting it off and you’d take steps to learn something new.

How are your tree identification skills?

2. Have a microadventure

Leave a weekend in your schedule free and isntead of planning the hell out of every spare moment you have, leave a weekend to chance. Go with the flow and do whatever you feel like at the time.

Book something last minute or pile the car with camping gear and go on a random road trip; whatever it is don’t worry too much about the fine details. Get the basics planned and make it happen!

Going kayakingPack your car and take off on a microadventure!

3. Plan a night sleeping under the stars

You don’t have to go with a full-on minimalist bivvy, tent camping will do! Build a campfire with the kids, star gaze with friends or simply snuggle up outdoors with a loved one.

Camping is good for you. The enhanced connection to nature and partially re-wilding your life for even just a couple of days could leave you feeling calmer and even sleeping better, not to mention it’s fun!

Spend a night sleeping under the stars!

4. Make a pledge to cut down your use of plastic

From the blight of microbeads to the gut-wrenching sight of turtles nesting on filthy plastic strewn beaches, plastic waste is finally, big news. The governments pledge to eliminate plastic waste by 2042 is lame, so it’s up to us as consumers to do what we can to play our part.

We’ve all got used to bringing our own shopping bags with us, but how about making more informed decisions when shopping and actively making choices that see us buying fewer products wrapped in or made from plastic.

Small changes are easy too. At the chippy ask for your chips to be wrapped in paper instead of those dreadful Styrofoam containers. Buy fresh food loose, and don’t choose versions that are packaged with unnecessary plastic. Look for alternative materials whenever you can. Cut down your expensive Cappuccino habit or take a refillable flask to the gym instead of bottled water…

Even if you can only manage to cut your use by 10%, it’s a great step.

Sevylor Riviera Inflatable Kayak Coniston WaterAlways fancied trying a new activity? Get out there and give it a go!

5. Find your focus and meditate

Meditation is simple, but it’s not easy. The good news is the more you do it the easier it is and myriad benefits come with it. Mindfulness isn’t just a hip term overused by the media, it’s actually a hugely beneficial skill that will make you more content and allow you to find your life more meaningful.

With such incredible benefits, now’s the time to stop making excuses and take the first steps to living more mindfully. Learning to focus your mind through meditation is the ideal way to get started and could mean that you end 2018 a far happier and more centred person.

Give bushcraft a tryWhy not learn some bushcrafting skills?

6. Become an actual Womble

Get involved with a local community group or take part with a cleanup effort taking place in an area that you like to go walking in. Even if you just do it once, an hour combing your local streets, park or woodland for rubbish is a highly satisfying thing to do.

7. Learn a nature based skill

Perhaps you’ve always fancied willow basked weaving, or having the ability to identify safe food you can forage? Perhaps you want to hone your natural navigation skills or learn any aspect of bushcraft?

There are countless ways to learn skills like this, from the humble book to wilderness and bushcrafting retreats so what are you waiting for!

Go Ape Delamere Forest Cheshire Tree Top Adventure Zip WireAlways fancied zooming down a zipwire or walking through tree tops? What are you waiting for?

8. Be daring and go for it!

If you stop and think for a couple of minutes, I bet there’s something you can think of that you’ve always wanted to try but have never got around to doing. Stop putting it off and pledge to make 2018 the year that you finally make it happen!

Whether that’s flying down a zip wire, white water rafting or kite buggying, if it’s something you’ve always fancied doing throw caution to the wind and just go for it!

GADGETS | Bikes! Camera! Action! MUSON MC1 Action Cam – Review

Muson action cam

What is it?

MUSON Action Camera, HD 1080P Sports Cam
£39.99 Buy it here

Product Features

  • 2.0″ Inch Full Color LCD Display
  • Built-In WIFI
  • 30-meters Waterproof
  • Wide-angle Lens
  • Video Resolution:1080p30/720p60
  • Photo Resolution: 12M/8M/5M/2M
  • Burst Photo: 3 Photos
  • Time Lapse: 2s/3s/5s/10s/20s/30s/60s
  • Power Frequency: 50Hz/60Hz/Auto

What’s in the box?

I’ve never been more impressed by the presentation and feel of a bit of gear. The cam arrived in a sturdy hard carry case, making it seem much more premium than its price tag.

The case was big enough to house the many accessories, straps, battery packs that come with the MUSON MC1 action cam, and perfect for those who like to get rough and mucky on their adventures.

Muson action cam

Decoding the various straps and accessories was very complicated but those who are well versed in the action cam world will not have a problem with it.

The accessories included waterproof housing box, handle bar/pole Mount, 9 various mounts, 2 clips, 4 bandages, 2 batteries, 2 tethers, 1 protective backdoor, 1 USB cable, 1 charging base, and finally- a lens cloth! The package contains everything you need, apart from a mains adapter to charge and a micro SD card for memory. For myself, as a beginner to the action cam world, this may have been a bit too much for me.

Matt and I took the camera on the legendary Tarka Trail in Devon. We hired bikes and strapped the cam to a helmet- which turned out to be rather fiddly, but as soon as it was secured- nothing could budge it!

Surprisingly, the camera recorded audio which we did not know it was capable of. Although the audio is quiet, the image quality is incredible for a camera in this price range. It is steady
and clear with a great wide angle shot for your action packed adventures.

The verdict

The look and feel of the camera is superb. It feels well designed, durable and most of all, completely fit for purpose. It boasts HD and WiFi capabilities along with a 30M, 170 degree
wide angle lens, 2 inch LCD screen, and up to 98ft depth when under water.

The only thing I’d recommend is educating yourself on action cams to avoid missing out on all the great features that this one contains.

At the bargain price of £39.99, the Muson Action Cam is a great budget alternative to a Go Pro, or a action-packed gift for someone who likes to walk on the wild side.

NEWS | Unique New Shepherd Hut Glamping On The Isle of Wight

Into the Woods Glamping on the Isle of Wight is owned by Fiona and Will Headington, and they’ve recently created some gorgeous new glamping accommodation called ‘Shepherd’s Hideaway’. Using four Blackdown Shepherd Huts instead of the usual single hut, each of the huts creates a different room and they are all set around a private decked area.

The Shepherd's Hideaway

Everything you want from a glamping holiday

One hut is a 16ft master bedroom with double bed and ensuite bathroom; another is a 4x bunk beds room with ensuite bathroom; and the other two huts are conjoined to create a larger living room/kitchen/diner with full facilities. All of the huts are heated, and hot tub hire is also available for added luxury.

The living room and kitchen area are heated by a wood-burning stove and there is a cosy eating area with dining table and benches, as well as sofas to relax on. Glamping in true style means using the wood-burning stove or gas hob to cook, and French doors lead to the private deck for al fresco eating. Fiona has created an eco-friendly environment with eco-products and a composting area.

The Shepherd's Hideaway

With an interior design of a Nordic/alpine look with lots of wood, fur, slate, red and green, the huts have the exciting nature and cosiness of a wooden cabin retreat.

Fiona adds: ‘We have created a luxury glamping experience at Into the Woods Glamping with something for everyone. Our Blackdown Shepherd Huts are cosy and well equipped, with comfy beds, power showers, and Wi-Fi to keep everyone happy. There is purposefully no TV, but a selection of games and books instead, to encourage conversation and downtime.’

The Shepherd's Hideaway

We think that Shepherd’s Hideaway is ideal for both couples looking for a romantic luxury glamping break and families with children; there’s a paddock and woods for children to play in, along with rustic wooden swings and rings.

TRAVEL | The Joy Of Staycations – What Makes Glamping So Great?

As dedicated campers we are die hard canvas campers, but the undeniable ease of glamping means it makes a great alternative to camping, especially during the colder winter months.

Over the last few years staycations have become more popular than ever and an abundance of self-catering accommodation has popped up all over the UK, providing comfortable and quirky stays in everything from pre-erected off-grid canvas bell tents complete with a comfy real bed, through to fully heated and powered luxury en suite cabins.

Whilst you may not agree with the glamping designation being applied to anything other than a tent, yurt or caravan, one thing is certain, a glamping stay makes for a refreshingly different weekend getaway. Glamping means there’s no faffing around transporting and setting up a full-on family camping get up and it’s infinitely more fun and romantic than staying in a soulless hotel or bland B&B.

Still not convinced? Read on for 6 reasons why we think glamping staycations are so great.

6 Reasons Why A Glamping Staycation Is Great

1. Crazy and quirky accommodation choices

Over the past few years we have stayed in everything from a converted horsebox to a tree-house. Glamping accommodation is often imaginative and re-purposed, ideal if you want something a bit different and fancy adding an element of fun to your usual weekend away.

2. Easy peasy to get away with minimial planning

A weekend glamping trip usually won’t require much more packing than if you were staying at a B&B or hotel. Depending on where you’re staying you’re likely to have central heating and/or a wood burning stove and perhaps your very own campfire, a bathroom, bed and kitchen area. If you don’t want take food, many glamping sites will even sell you breakfast hampers bursting full of delicious local produce.

3. All the comforts of home and more!

As well as being as warm and cosy as your own home, some luxury glamping accommodation can even provide you with extras like locally sourced toiletries, bed linen, TV, towels and even your own private hot tub! I stayed in a wooden glamping pod in Scotland last year that that thoughtfully provided extras like mood lighting as well as a selection of DVDs and books.

4. Close to the outdoors, whatever the weather

Of course sleeping under canvas is the ultimate way to get closer to nature, but in winter, all but the hardiest of campers will be glad of a warmer alternative!

The long winter months can be tough to get through and a long weekend break that isn’t weather dependent can be a great way to lighten the spirits.

5. Benefit from local insight

Glamping site owners are often local land owners or farmers forced to diversify. Owners usually live on site and as such are an excellent source of local knowledge. We’ve received tips from glamping site owners on everything from the best places to eat, to recommended walks in the area and have found the insight priceless!

6. Spend less time traveling and more time having fun

A staycation means no having to rock up to the airport 3 hours before you fly followed by a lengthy flight. Even short-haul destinations can still mean a day of travel whereas a staycation means staying somewhere closer to home, so you’ll benefit from a much shorter journey. With less traveling you can have more time relaxing, exploring and having fun!
