ACTIVE | 10 Top Ski Runs in Europe

If the winter olympics has got you longing for the slopes and you’re thinking of getting in a holiday before the end of the season, read on as we reveal some of the best runs in Europe. Have you skied or snowboarded on any them?

Europe is home to giant peaks and vast mountain ranges and that’s why millions of skiers flock to resorts across the region to experience the best snow and slopes.

With countless dramatic inclines, high-speed descents, gentle slopes, and incredible snowscapes to choose from, we’ve selected some of the best ski runs in Europe to inspire your next holiday and hone your skills.

Mont Fort, Switzerland

Excellent fitness, agility and nerve levels are required to tackle the altitude and skiing challenges presented by the 3,329m Mont Fort. Found in Verbier — arguably the continent’s most luxurious and party-centric resort — Mont Fort provides a 1,300m run from top to bottom and is generally considered the most challenging of Verbier’s pistes.

After taking four cable cars just to reach the summit, you’ll meet panoramic views of glaciers and sudden descents. Although, if you really want to take advantage of this breathtaking landscape, try skiing at dawn to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over the mountaintops. Peppered with moguls to dodge and memorably steep, you’ll need at least intermediate skills to make a success of Mont Fort.

Ventina, Italy

The beauty of the Ventina run is that it’s equally enjoyable for both beginners and pros. What you get with the Ventina piste is a long descent and shallow gradient that allows you to truly take in the incredible mountainscape around you. Although, your legs might feel like spaghetti after tackling the 11km run.

Ventina offers spectacular views, a gentle descent and a winding route with a total drop of 1,430m — ideal for families and groups.

The Streif, Austria

As the name suggests, the Streif (pronounced the same as ‘strife’) spells trouble if you go at it with beginner skills. One of the most feared runs in the world, the Streif is found on the Hahenkamm mountain and hosts one of the most hazardous races in the World Cup.

You’ll almost freefall from the starting gate as you begin your 3.3km decent at the top of the Streif. But you’ll have to compose yourself quickly, as you’ll be forced to navigate maximum 85% gradients at a speed of around 84mph. In fact, the run is so iconic that a documentary film was made about it — Streif: One Hell of a Ride — in 2015.

Harakiri, Austria

At 1,500m in length, this Austrian piste is often icy in the centre, with easier-to- grip snow around the edges. Found in the resort of Mayrhofen, the Harakiri piste is named after the samurai ritual of committing suicide, which may be a reference to the fact that it’s the steepest groomed slope in the world with an average gradient of 78%.

Apparently, the start of your descent is the worst on the Harakiri and it’s advised that you keep your weight on your outer ski and try to slow down when possible to reach the bottom upright. Also, don’t be surprised to see skiers tumble down the entire run. In other words, make sure you have plenty of skiing lessons before you attempt the Harakiri.

Aiguille Rouge, France

The Aiguille Rouge — or Red Needle in English — is the tallest peak in the Les Arcs resort. With a length of 8km and vertical descent of over 2,000m, this run is classified as black at the top and red once you reach around third of the way down. With a descent that start from 3,226m, one of the greatest draws of the Aiguille Rouge is the panoramic view of the Italian Alps, Pierra Menta, Mont Pourri, and extraordinary Mont Blanc.

Skiing in Europe

Grand Couloir, France

Although it’s the broadest and easiest of the three Courchevel couloirs, Grand Couloir is the only one classed as a run on the piste map.

900m in length with a maximum slope gradient of 85%, the first challenge to overcome if you ski this run is navigating the steep path leading from the cable car station in La Saulire — especially perilous if the conditions are icy. Once you arrive, you have potentially huge moguls to contend with, which can make the beginning of your descent the riskiest part of your experience. Once you’ve tackled these tricky snow bumps, the slope will open up and the remainder of your descent should be a smooth delight.

Pas de Chavanette, France

Often intriguingly referred to as the ‘Swiss Wall’, this famous 200m ski run is based at the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area on the Swiss-French border. One of the most exciting runs in the world, Pas de Chavanette features rapid drops, with some angles being so steep that you might struggle to see what’s hurtling towards you as you descend.

Ski here and you’ll experience an ungroomed run — although the difficulty level depends on the time of year and conditions. Try it on a decent layer of snow and you can weave and glide effortlessly. But beware when the run is icier and bumpier — expert skills and emergency stops will be required.

Hidden Valley, Italy

For skiers who enjoy the scenery as much as the activity, Hidden Valley is a snowy paradise. Skiing here will make you feel completely isolated from the world as the Dolomite peaks tower over you.
Hidden Valley begins at the peak of Lagazuoi (2,750m) and features a gentle descent scattered with sights of frozen waterfalls and riverbeds. An excellent run for novices and one of nature’s best stress-busters.

Piste 4, Sweden

Piste 4 at the Riksgränsen ski resort is a run you’ll have to time right if you want to try it. Based in the Swedish Arctic Circle, the lack of sun means you can only ski here between mid-February and mid-summer. However, if skiing under a midnight sun sounds like your thing, Piste 4 is where you need to head.

Freeskiers love launching off the natural bumps of the Riksgränsen slopes, and if you give Piste 4 a go, you’ll actually glide into Norway before looping back around during your descent.

Lauberhorn, Switzerland

If you’re confident in your skiing skills and feed on adrenaline-pumping sports, the Lauberhorn run is the challenge for you. Supposedly the fastest run in the World Cup, you start from the 2,500m summit and travel
4.5km in just two and a half minutes.

On your descent, there’s a 130-foot jump that catapults you into the air to contend with, and you’ll reach speeds of around 99mph — enough for g-forces to come into play. However, it’s an exhilarating experience, if you can handle it.

CAMPING NEWS | Boutique Camping Launches New Star Bell Tent Range on Kickstarter

Boutique CmapingWe’re huge fans of our funky Boutique Camping star canopy bell tent, so we’re delighted to bring you news of their brand new Kickstarter campaign.

Boutique Camping have launched a full Star bell tent range on Kickstarter, including the Star bell tent and the Star Emperor bell tent. Designed and developed by glamping expert and camping innovator Boutique Camping, it’s time to get your hands on the most exciting tents from £435 with a pledge on the Boutique Camping Kickstarter page.

So what’s it all about?

The 5m Star bell was released and tested in the market last year, with a limited production number of 50 tents, resulting in fantastic feedback. Having been in the glamping business for such a long time, the Boutique Camping team have been able to improve the design, making it a must-have for families and their camping trips. How have they done this?

The Star bell range comes ready to use straight out of the box. Ideal for everyday users, experts, mums, dads and all the kids alike, it’s designed for glampers who are looking for more space and a lot more durability.

What makes them different?

Every design has an integrated canopy, this allows a large group to utilise the 50cm overhang and leave muddy shoes at the entrance. No longer will you need to spend extra time and money sourcing a canopy and putting it up alongside your tent. The tents also boast 360° netting, which offers more than just a fantastic view of your surroundings; you can keep dry on wet summer days and feel relief from the extra ventilation when it gets a little warmer. All this while knowing no creepy crawlies are keeping you company.

Meanwhile, it’s goodbye to guy ropes and sliders and hello to webbing, creating a sturdier pitch even in the highest winds.

The Star Emperor bell tent Like the Star Bell, it boasts of having features like webbing, 2m high entrance, 360° netting and unique curved entrance. However, the Star Emperor tent is an enormous; 6.55m x 4m with 2 central poles and a unique curved star shape, making it the ideal choice for a family weekend away.

STAYS WITH STYLE | A Romantic Weekend Retreat in the Shropshire Hills

Rowan Lodge Woodland Escapes Ludlow Shorpshire GlampingWhere did we go?

Rowan Lodge Woodland Escapes Ludlow Shorpshire GlampingRowan Lodge Woodland Escapes Ludlow Shorpshire GlampingWe loved the soft furnishing and decor throughout

Our Visit

As we neared our destination we ascended high up into the hills, eventually disappearing into a cloud, with dimly visible sheep marking the common either side of us. Clee Hill is home to one of the highest settlements in the England and although the cottage was easy to find, it felt like we were miles from anywhere thanks to the private woodland setting of the cottage. In fact there’s 45 acres of woodland here that guests are free to explore, and as we drove slowly down the winding track through the woods, a feeling of calm descended.

On arrival we were met by friendly Fern who walked us over to the cottage and gave us the lowdown on using the woodurner and central heating. First impressions were good and the cottage felt spacious and yet cosy. A quick nose around the kitchen confirmed it had everything we needed to make our evening meal and we quickly settled in and cracked open the wine.

The bedroom was lovely with gorgeous bedding. The soft fluffy robes laid out for us were a lovely touch and the bedroom was very well appointed. The double bed was comfortable, and with both the heating and wood burner on, the cottage quickly heated up. In fact the living room got so warm that despite the freezing cold night, we ended up standing out on our private decked area hugging and looking up at the stars whilst we cooled down.

If it’s a romantic break you’re looking for then Rowan Cottage is definitely a good choice!

The views from our cottage were beautiful and expansive, and we enjoyed a particularly spectacular sunset while we were there. Although it was too chilly to sit out on the decking, in the summer, I can imagine it would provide the perfect way to while away an evening in peaceful and pretty surroundings.

Out and About

I’d never visited Ludlow before but knew of the region due to it’s status as a mecca for foodies and for it’s proximity to the Shropshire Hills. We had intended to go walking in the hills, but ended up spending a relaxed afternoon mooching around the streets of Ludlow and visiting the castle.

With an entry fee of just £5 per adult, Ludlow Castle is excellent value for money and well worth a visit.

Venture across the river after you visit the castle to take in the beautiful sight of the River Teme, and if you’ve still got energy to burn, head up the wooded hills to Whitcliffe Common for a lovely short woodland walk and views back across the river towards the castle.

On the way home we took a detour and stopped off at Ironbridge, somewhere I’ve been wanting to go back to for years. The plan was to go and see the world heritage site and spend the rest of the afternoon at Blist Hill Victorian Town, sadly both were shut! Blist Hill is shut on a Monday and Ironbridge is undergoing lengthy repairs so none of the bridge was visible and it was a bit like a Ghost Town! We did stop for a fabulous lunch though at the Tea Emporium which is well worth a visit.

The Verdict

The Rowan Lodge accommodation that we stayed in was superb. Furnished to a very high standard, it contained everything we needed for a really comfortable stay and the big corner sofa and wood burning stove made the cottage perfect for cosying up in at the end of the day.

Having photographed some of the most stunning sunsets I’ve ever seen, visiting the castle, ambling around Ironbridge and walking at Whitcliffe common, I can’t recommend the location highly enough. Clee Hill itself is lovely with sheep freely roaming, and despite the secluded location, there’s a decent shop a few minutes drive away well stocked with any essentials you might have forgotten.

Final Thoughts

We loved our stay and would love to return in the summer to give us chance to spend more time outdoors and exploring the woodland. This is a super cottage that offers exceptional value for money and is ideal for a romantic getaway whatever the weather. We booked our stay with Glamping Hub which cost £58.85 per night.

WELLBEING | Exploring The Benefits of Walking Meditation – Easy Outdoor Meditative Practices to Try

It’s a fact that spending time outdoors is beneficial to your wellbeing, but a mindful approach can reap even greater rewards. Read on to learn how to introduce some easy meditative practices into your walking.

Your mind on nature

A mounting body of research is confirming that spending time outdoors is good for us. In January 2018 Neuroscientist Dr Andrea Michelli discussed the findings of an app based research project which found that there is a strong link between exposure to nature and wellbeing whilst various studies by Ulrich, Kim, and Cervinka found that spending time in nature is associated with a positive mood and improved wellbeing.

So, spending time outdoors is good for you, but how can you maximise the benefits you reap from being outdoors?

Walking is an easy and accessible way to spend time outdoors, and whilst a natural environment is best, even urban walking can provide benefits. Not only does natural bright light boost the production of serotonin, but UV rays on the skin stimulate endorphins resulting in an improvement in mood, so you don’t have to head for the countryside or hills to benefit.

Aber Fall Circular Walk

What is walking meditation?

You might have heard of walking meditation before, and on the face of it, it probably sounds quite simple. Dig a little deeper however and walking meditation can be a tricky process.

Buddhist walking meditation involves focusing your attention in various different ways, often whilst walking back and forth along a short path, carrying with it the obvious risk of making you look ‘unusual’ to any onlookers. Whilst Natural Qigong Walking involves a variety of sequences, incorporating Wind breathing, requiring the following of a relatively complex set of instructions that takes dedicated practice to master.

Following official advice on how to do it ‘properly’ is all well and good, but the amount of commitment needed to master it could mean you’re much more likely to fail. Instead, I recommend picking out elements of true walking meditation, combined with simple mindfulness techniques to find something that works for you.

Hafren Forest walk in Wales

6 Easy Outdoor Meditative Practices to Try

1. Focus on something

Repeat the same well-known walk frequently, each time focusing on something different. That could be focusing on the weather; the feel of the sunshine or wind on your face, on the sound of birdsong, on the trees you pass, you get the idea.

2. Pay attention to your physical self

Walk slowly, purposefully and focus your attention on how each step feels in a physical sense. Start by focusing on the feel of your foot striking the floor and slowly move your awareness up your body as you walk.

Wheelock canal walk sandbach, Cheshire

3. Talk about nature

If you are walking with a partner, have gentle conversation about how you feel in that moment or discuss any aspect of the nature all around you. Walking aids relaxation and can make you more receptive to your environment so as you notice details, voice them. Even if you are walking alone, you can still have an internal conversation with yourself, noting the sensations and things you see that make you feel happy or that stand out as unusual for example.

4. Repeat a mantra as you walk

Your mantra can be as simple or as complex as you like, but I find a simple affirmation can often work well something along the lines of “I am happy and calm in this moment” can work wonders.

5. Remember somewhere special

Find a beautiful spot and sit still for a while, slow your breathing and take in every little detail. You’ll need to focus deeply as you take everything in, and if you return to the spot frequently, you’ll eventually be able to call this calm happy place to mind at will.

6. Identify and focus on something beautiful

Doing this can produce a euphoric feeling that will instantly calm and uplift you. Take time to gaze at and contemplate a beautiful landscape or a majestic tree. If you are walking in an urban environment, contemplate the brilliant green moss growing on a brick wall and notice how nature always finds a way.

GEAR | CimAlp Warm Technical Base Layer Review

cimalp warm base layer review

What did we test?

Technical details

  • Optimal moisture transfer for all your activities
  • Extra-soft, brushed interior for superior comfort
  • Odours limited by IONIC technology by CimAlp
  • Ergonomic, feminine shape
  • Flat stitcghing

What did we think?

We’re keen to spend time outdoors in all weathers, and that means we frequently go out walking in cold and wet conditions. I usually wear a pair of leggings or thermals under my usual walking trousers in winter, but partner Andy was new to technical base layers and was keen to give them a go.

The base layers proved to be an equally good and comfy fit for both of us. I like the fact that they are warm without being bulky and whilst they fit snugly, they weren’t tight and moved with me, in fact once on I barely noticed I was wearing an extra layer.

We’ve since been out walking wearing our base layers under our usual walking gear in freezing cold weather with snow on the ground and on wet and windy days. Normally winter days with strong winds can be really chilling as the wind whips through walking trousers, but the added layer makes a huge difference.

cimalp warm base layer review

We often stop for a bite to eat or just to enjoy a view part-way through a walk, and sitting on the grass or on a rock in winter in normal walking trousers can lead to a very cold bottom, but we sat comfortably on a cliff edge in Angelsey for almost half an hour in total comfort thanks to the CimAlp base layers.

The interior of the leggings/long johns are soft and brushed making them feel really cosy to wear and although I’m not particularly tall, I have longer than average legs, and found the length of the women’s leggings perfect.

We’ve already made a lot of good use of our CimAlp base layers and would definitely recommend them.

What we liked most

  • Brushed interior is warm and cosy without adding bulk
  • Good leg length and overall an excellent fit for both of us
  • Nice high waist, sitting on the natural waistline so they keep your lower back warm
