NEWS | Time To Talk Day – Ramblers Group Mental Wellbeing and Walking

The Ramblers group are bringing more people together across Britain who may feel lonely, isolated or are struggling with their mental health. Together with Time to Change they are encouraging all their groups to have conversations about mental health during their walks in the first week of February.

Time To Talk Day 2019

Time to Talk Day 7th February 2019

Mental health problems affect one in four of us, yet many people are still afraid to talk about it. Walking is a perfect way to start having a conversation with others and open up.

Being physically active, connecting with nature and other people – the ingredients of a Ramblers group walk – are all things which have been shown to have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing.

That is why the Ramblers are supporting Time to Talk Day to end mental health stigma. Together, they are encouraging the nation to get walking and talking, beginning with Time to Talk Day 7th February 2019.

Time to Talk Day 2019

How Walking Can Help Mental Health

We know people benefit physically, emotionally and mentally once they start to walk regularly outdoors. The Ramblers is committed to helping everyone find their feet to improve their mental health through walking and tackle loneliness in our communities.

As well as being great for physical health, walking also benefits our mental health.

  • Walking and talking come very naturally together and walking in a group can make us feel more connected to each other, reducing loneliness and isolation.
  • Walking can improve mood and sleep-quality, reduce stress and anxiety.
  • Being in nature or in green spaces is shown to have a positive impact on mental health through being closer to greenery and being in a natural environment.

FESTIVALS | Great Reasons to Go to Bluedot Festival 2019

I love music and I love science which makes Bluedot the perfect festival as far as I’m concerned. Cheshire based Bluedot festival has been running since 2016 and has since gathered a reputation for being quite simply “brilliant”. Seriously, everyone I know who’s been has said the same thing.

The format of the award winning 4-day festival is a little unusual in that it combines live music, expert talks, live and hands-on science experiments and art installations. This year is a really special year too, as Jodrell Bank, where the festival takes place, played a unique roll in the Apollo 11 landing which took place in 1969, 50 years ago.

Bluedot festival cheshire jodrell bank 2019

Science Stuff Happens

With lectures and live science experiments taking place, Bluedot is like a dream come true for people like me who like to understand “stuff”. There’s no two ways about it, I’m a science geek. The only magazine I read and have a subscription to is New Scientist, my book shelf is full of books on Neuroscience and Psychics (most of which I don’t even remotely understand), oh and I have a massive fan-girl crush on Liz Bonnin who’ll be speaking at the festival.

Whilst we’re talking about science, the festival name is taken from an iconic 1990 photograph of earth taken by Voyager 1 called “Pale Blue Dot”. If you’ve not seen the photograph taken from a mind boggling 6 billion kilometers away, It’s a humbling and thought provoking image, see Pale Blue Dot.

The Lineup Is Ridiculously Good

I was gutted to miss the Chemical Brothers who headlined in 2018, but in 2019 we’ve got Kraftwerk and New Order. NEW ORDER! Not to mention the brilliant Hot Chip, Kate Tempest, John Grant, 808 state, Anna Calvi, Ibibio Sound Machine, the Go! Team and loads more. I know right?!

See the full Bluedot festival lineup.

The Location Is Beautiful

Located at Jodrell Bank in the heart of rural Cheshire, the sight of the enormous Lovell telescope (the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world no less) is always magical. Even though I live just down the road and drive past frequently, they (there’s the big showoffy one and a little dinky baby one right beside it) still fill me with a sense of awe and make me feel proud to be part of such an ingenuitive race.

The Festival Attracts Nice People

OK so this might be purely anecdotal, but I’ve only ever heard good things about the festival. From great write ups in the press to friends and colleagues who’ve been and reported back. It would seem that unlike the Leeds Festival, you won’t find naked drunk people sledging down hills on flaming lilos (seriously, it happened).

Bluedot festival seems to attract a slightly more refined, yet equally fun loving crowd and has a reputation for being friendly. Yeah OK sure quite a few of us going are somewhere on the geek-scale, but we know how to party too!

It Doesn’t Cost Too Much

With Bluedot festival tickets including camping available for £159, and having looked at how much some other festivals cost, I think it’s great value, and they even offer payment plans too helping you to spread the cost should you need to.

Weekend tickets go on sale on Thursday 24th January 2019 and cost £159, buy Bluedot festival tickets here.

CAMPING | New Robens Route Entry Level Technical Tents Range 2019

The new Route range from Robens meets the growing demand for entry-level technical tents that are easy to understand and use. Read on to find out more.

Robens Route technical tent range 2019

The new tents perfectly address the needs of adventure sections of national award schemes, youth organisations and for those adventurers just starting out who are looking to balance performance with a competitive price tag.

Route tents are packed with Robens heritage and use HydroTex Core – a 75D 185T polyester fabric with a PU-coating that provides a rain-beating 3,000mm hydrostatic head. To provide structure and reliable performance Robens supplies quality T6 #6061 aluminium alloy poles that run through colour-coded pole sleeves closed one end for easy insertion. All tents, except the Boulder 2, are pitched outer first or as one with the inner.

Good ventilation is common throughout the Robens Route range thanks to cowl-protected mesh vents and the inner door mesh panel. Except for the solo Arrow Head, all models feature inner doors that allow two people to sit in comfort without stressing seams. These doors fold neatly out of the way into side pockets.

The range comprises four tried and tested models.

Robens Arrow Head £104.99

Robens Arrow Head £104.99

The fast-pitching 1.5kg tent uses the side-entry sloping tunnel design to provide stable and comfortable sleeping space with enhanced headroom for solo use while minimising pack size and weight. Storage is maximised by offsetting the inner tent to give extra porch space while pre-bent alloy poles enhance headroom.

Find out more about the Robens Arrow Head tent.

Robens Arch 2 £169.99

Robens Route Arch 2 Technical Tent

The simple tapered twin-hoop design is an ever-popular choice with cyclists, trekkers and other lightweight campers and this 2kg tent offers all the features and comfort required for less demanding adventures. The Arch 2 pitches quickly and easily, making it the ideal shelter for two self-propelled travellers who, at the end of an exhausting day, want to relax in generous internal space with a handy porch for storage.

Find out more about the Robens Arch 2 tent.

Robens Boulder 2 £149.99

Robens boulder 2 tent 2019

The combination of dome style and short transverse ridge pole offers flexible living, cooking and storage space with excellent internal height and width that allows the two occupants to sit side by side. The 2.2kg tent features twin doors, allowing each camper their own easy access and options in door opening to shelter from the wind as well as delivering cross ventilation. Locking tips and twin eyelets in sturdy webbing secure the internal poles with the ridge pole.

Find out more about the Robens Boulder 2 tent.

Robens Pioneer 3EX £224.99

Robens Pioneer 3EX Tent £224.99

The three-person Pioneer 3EX tunnel tent is stable and straightforward to pitch. It has a single side door that leads to a generous porch area, with ample space for storage and headroom to sit relaxing during poor weather. The 2.8kg weight is still low enough that two people might consider it as a spacious option if unsettled weather is expected.

NEWS | Funky Modular Glamping Pods Made Using Recycled Plastic From Above All C6(n)

Dorset based design and engineering company Above All C6(n) are innovators who have taken plastic waste and converted it into temporary structures, ideal for quirky festival glamping. Read on to find out more.

Pod(o) modular glamping festival camping pods

For around 8 years they have been conducting research and development using a kit of parts that can be constructed in a variety of flexible configurations to create temporary structures.

The pilot Pod(o), currently made from around 75% recycled plastics, mainly single use plastics like water bottles, and can be used as temporary accommodation, ideal for festivals, quirky glamping sites or they can be used in crisis situations whenever temporary housing is needed.  The first prototype was debuted at The Showman’s Show in October 2018 and moving forward Above All C6(n) are looking to move into 100% recycled manufacturing.

The modular pod consists of six, separate shell parts which will also incorporate solar power, an eco-water supply and bio toilet. The Pod can be wrapped in any design, can feature advertising and will also be extendable, stackable and also flat packable for easy transportation.

Pod(o) modular glamping festival camping pods

Charlie Hall, Founder and MD of Above All C6(n), said: “We need to change how we think of buildings – how they are made and what they are capable of becoming, and MESR TECNIC (Modular, Extensible, Scalable and Reusable) architecture holds the key to this.

The ground breaking company, whose structures have been used by Moet Hennessy at events throughout this summer, won the Most Innovative Solution for Temporary Structures award at the Major Events Summit 2018 in Liverpool in June.

Charlie continued: “The Pod provides an instant, reusable accommodation solution.

“It’s warm, comfortable and lockable. And while we are currently piloting the two-person unit, they will ultimately be extendable and stackable with the potential to create entire ‘villages’.”

“But what makes it especially appealing is the fact that it provides a permanent use for single use plastic.”

Come early 2019, Above All C6(n) are developing a specialised bespoke modular living space for a client that will provide an alternative holistic solution to the outdoor accommodation market.

What I thought

There’s a long story behind how and why having a small, light multi-sport pack is very useful for me.  I have become a multi-sport athlete almost accidentally and I’m sure that over the course of the year I will share some more details of that particular story.

For now, let’s just say that I swim, cycle and run – the component parts of triathlons. When I’m training I really felt I needed a small pack that I could wear whilst on my bike or when running. Since I started my training at the beginning of last year I’ve managed to wean myself away from taking everything including the kitchen sink on the bike or on the trail with me. My friend (who is also my coach) says I still need to streamline!

But even though I’m (still) streamlining there are some essentials I’ve just got to have with me. Water, for one. I’m still a thirsty runner because I’m relatively new at it. My house keys, because the house insurance demands that I lock my door when I leave home. My wallet contents – which now lives more or less permanently in a the cutest race pack that I was given for Christmas. Bike stuff when I’m cycling: inner tube, tyre levers, puncture repair, waterproof jacket. My inhaler, because I’m still a certified asthmatic, even if I’m running the heck away from active symptoms.

Osprey Sylva 5 Women's Multi-Sport Pack

So let’s talk about the Osprey Sylva 5

This is a lovely dainty offering from Osprey (more detail about the sizing later on). It has a mesh back to go against your own back and then a nice gap, supported by a rigid shaped panel, to create air flow. This prevents the pack creating a nasty sweaty hot mess while you’re active.

Good sized pockets

The pack has two main pockets. The one closest to your back contains all the fittings necessary to load in a bladder pack: a clip to stop it moving around and a special opening to feed out the bladder pack tube.

Osprey Sylva 5 Women's Multi-Sport Pack

The second main pocket contains a delightful array of web/mesh inner pockets, elastic loops and a plastic clip. So you can organise in here to your heart’s content. There’s room for me to stuff in most of my running outfit, but not the trainers, even when I’ve got a bladder pack full of water in the rear compartment.

Size matters

The new Sylva comes in two sizes and I tested the smaller of the two. The back panel has been constructed with a rigid angle to keep it away from your own back. It works great at allowing the air to flow between you and it, but this great feature also makes the internal space less malleable as a result.

I could fit the following in;

  • Running leggings
  • Socks
  • Sports bra
  • Sleeveless vest
  • Running jumper
  • Race pack holding my wallet contents and inhaler
  • My work pass (I run home from work and need to get back into the office the next day!)
  • My phone
  • An Osprey internal bladder pack holding up to 2 litres of water

Osprey Sylva 5 Women's Multi-Sport Pack

For me, the size works well. It enables me to run home from work, even if I can’t fit my trainers in it. I have a trusty Orla Kiely floral fabric shopper bag that I use for triathlon transition, and as my swim bag, and now that shopper carries both the Osprey Sylva 5, my lunch bag and my trainers to work with me on the bus. (What can I say – that floral shopper just screams middle aged housewife, so I find it entertaining to see it at triathlon transition with all the technical bags.)

I wasn’t able to fit my size 7 running trainers into the Sylva 5. Some later experimentation reveals that the angle of the back panel makes this unsuitable to get them in even when otherwise totally empty. So if you can’t do without that extra capacity then I’d recommend going for the Sylva 12 instead.

A couple of things I wasn’t too keen on were the ends of the straps which I found to be flappy. They have a neat sewn loop to stop them fraying, but there are no strap, uh, what’s the word? Retainers? so those loose ends ended up flapping around my elbows like crazy. On my second run I tied them up and that was better, but they could definitely need a little loop to tuck them away solidly into.

Osprey Sylva 5 Women's Multi-Sport Pack

The other thing, and it might sound a bit nit-picky but the colour on the label is “Zodiac Purple”. Maybe it’s a bit like that dress that people disagreed on the colour of a few years back, but I wouldn’t call this bag any shade of purple, it’s more of a bright, royal blue colour, so if the colour is really important to you, I’d advise going and looking at it in person rather than relying on the label colour.

Finally, Osprey sent over a sample bag for us to test and this didn’t come with the integrated high visibility rain cover which made it into the production version – so I haven’t been able to test this.

The final verdict

The Osprey Sylva 5 is definitely a keeper, despite minor niggles it’s been a great addition to my training kit. The bag didn’t shift when I ran, and the AirSpeed back also meant that I didn’t overheat. It’s the same great Osprey quality that you always get with the brand, and of course, it benefits from the Osprey All Mighty Guarantee.

Thank you to Osprey who provided us with the featured product. We were not paid to write this review.

WELLBEING | A Group Meditation & Walk In Manchester With Wild Awake Mindfulness

I wanted to start the new year as I meant to continue, so I booked a Mindfulness in nature walk run by Wild Awake Mindfulness which took place at Chorlton Water Park on Saturday 12th January 2019. I paid £8 for a 2 hour woodland walk which included 2 guided meditations. Read on to find out more.

Wild Awake Mindfulness Meditation in Nature Manchester

This year I promised myself that I’d do more things to nurture and enhance my wellbeing. Although I’ve dabbled on and off with my practice of meditation and Buddhism for many years, I wanted to place more regular emphasis on my spiritual wellbeing, not only to fill my time, but to help keep me calmer and more centred in general.

I find it all to easy for my life to feel like it’s spiralling frantically out of control before I realise I’m feeling burnt out. I would then seek to address how I was feeling reactively. This year however, I wanted to take a different, more considered pre-emptive approach.

Wild Awake Mindfulness Meditation in Nature Manchester

In the past few weeks I’ve tried Yoga Nidra, had a massage, Reiki, taken part in a chanting circle, looked into various mindfulness retreats and this weekend, I went on a group mindfulness in nature walk, run by Wild Awake Mindfulness.

Wild Awake Mindfulness Meditation in Nature Manchester

The walk started at 10:30am at Chorlton Water Park. I was only vaguely aware of the location until the night before when I planned the route and was nicely surprised to find it was just a 35 minute drive away from me in Cheshire.

Despite coming across as highly confident, doing things like this on my own can often fill me with anxiety, but not this time. I was surprisingly calm about it, perhaps the inner work I’ve been doing recently played a hand?

Wild Awake Mindfulness Meditation in Nature Manchester

There were around 10 of us on the walk in total, lead by Claire who founded Wild Awake Mindfulness based on the belief that you don’t need to make a grand gesture to engage with nature and find greater inner calm. Recognising the stress-busting benefits of nature doesn’t need to be difficult, and with so many easily accessible green spaces and urban parks, getting a wellbeing-bosting nature fix is a simple way to feeling calmer and more connecte to nature.

Wild Awake Mindfulness Meditation in Nature Manchester

During the 2 hour session we had a gentle stroll and stopped 3 times, twice for guided meditations and once for a group activity. During meditation Claire invited us to focus on a variety of different sensations using all of our senses. From the smells of the damp woodland to the icy cold wind on our faces. I found it remarkably easy to quiet my mind and focus my attention – again, I think this is a clear sign that the work I’ve been doing is paying off, making it easier for me to meditate and quiet my busy mind.

Wild Awake Mindfulness Meditation in Nature Manchester

Despite wearing several layers, during the first seated meditation, I found I was still cold, but rather than let the cold distract me, I acknowledged my discomfort, sat with it for a while and told myself it was fine, that it was temporary and nothing more than a feeling that would pass. In a couple of hours once back in my car I knew the cold would be replaced by warmth. The feeling of discomfort left me, and I continued happily with the guided meditation, my mind not really deviating again.

Wild Awake Mindfulness Meditation in Nature Manchester

As well as feeling like I got something out of the meditation we also got the chance to get up close and personal with a tree whilst blindfolded. Not as weird as it sounds, but the “find my tree” exercise we partnered up to do, was something I enjoyed immensely, and getting to chat to a few different people as we walked was wonderful too.

Chorlton water park in Manchester

If you’re new to meditation or just want to find new ways to practice mindfulness, I can’t recommend Wild Awake Mindfulness enough. You can see all of Claire’s upcoming mindfulness events here.
