CAMPING | 2019 Camping Trends – New Camping Accessories Blur The Line Between Home & Camping

After weeks drooling over the new ranges from all the biggest names in camping and following on from our visit to the 2019 Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show we thought we’d give you the low down on 4 hot trends for the 2019 camping season.

BO Camp camping furnitureNew materials and furniture designs using wood are more readily available this year

What we’re most excited about is the continued move away from the purely practical, with many manufacturers understanding that campers are increasingly looking for a contemporary design asthetic.

Dreary white and ghastly bottle green plastic furniture and functional, ugly camping accessories are definitely out as we continue to see a move towards more natural products like bamboo and the use of contemporary fabrics, patterns and colour.

Bamboo Camp Furniture

Bamboo has been increasingly used in camp furniture over the last 3-4 years and the popularity of this natural and lightweight material in camping accessories shows no signse of slowing down. Indeed there were more bamboo furniture options than ever at this years show, with everyone from Vango to Zempire showcasing beautiful camp furniture made from bamboo.

Zempire Kitpac Table LargeZempire Kitpac Bamboo  Camp Table

From large camping storage and kitchen units to dining tables and even occasional tables, the show was packed full of bamboo camping gear.

A couple of our favourites include the Zempire Kitpac table shown avoe and Bo-Camp Bayswater collapsable storage. New from Vango was a bamboo dining table with grooves cut into it to hold wine glasses – perfect on uneven ground when wine glasses can easily slip or get knocked off the table. Somebody pass the Prosecco!

Stylish Camp Chairs

Camp chairs too are finally evolving and benefitting from a design overhaul and some much needed R&D. No longer are camp chairs bog standard and boring, as we see a new generatin of chairs that have been designed to look good, some of which are stylish enough to not look out of place used at home in the garden.

Natural wood frames were on show from Robens with the new Kaya which has a light yet stable bamboo frame that folds out in seconds and provides high levels of comfort and style and there’s the Bo-Camp Edmonton chair, a stylish lounger with a linen-look fabric that wouldn’t look out of place in the garden.

Outwell Sandsend Green Camp ChairOutwell Sandsend Green Camp Chair

Whilst slightly more traditional in their design, comfort is definitely enhanced in camp chairs like the Vango Entwine, a generously size padded camp chair available in vibrant colours. There’s the Outwell Sardis Lake, a double camp chair in a lovely contemporary grey fabric and the Outwell Sandsend Camp Chair with its minimal and understated look shown above, that also caught our eye.

Big Comfy SIMs

A few years ago SIMs (self inflating matts) where largely the sole domain of backpackers in need of lightweight camping gear they could carry with them, whilst many family campers opted for folding camp beds or inflatable air mattresses. Things have been steadily changing over the last few years though and we’ve seen more and more high quality SIMs come onto the market aimed at the family camping and glamping market.

Zempire SIMZempire Monstamat 10cm SIM

The benefit of a SIM of course is that they are much warmer to sleep on that an air mattress, more durable and they are arguably more comfortable as most include a foam component inside. The downside however is that a typical SIM with a depth of perhaps just 5cm doesn’t provide a high enough level of comfort night after night; certainly not for older campers, side sleepers or anyone with joint or mobility problems.

Vango Shangri La SIM doubleThe 15cm thick Vango Shangri La Double SIM

The new breed of SIMs are focused on providing higher levels of comfort and there are now several to choose from, from the likes of Vango, Outwell, Zempire and Bo-Camp which all provide depths from anything around 7.5cm right up to a whopping 15cm. Whilst a super thick double SIM like the Vango Shangri La might set you back upwards of £250, they’re a great long term investment, and unlike cheap air mattresses, you’ll get a much longer life out of them so they are well worth considering.

Stylish Storage & Accessories

When it comes to storage and creating more of a glamping feel on camping trips, for many years we’ve been seeking out homewares that can also fold flat, making them also suitable for camping use. From folding side tables to storage chests, buying things designed for the home and using them for camping provides the ideal way to ensure your camping set up isn’t just practical, but that it looks good too and finally camping manufacturers seem to be understand that functionality just isn’t enough for many of todays campers.

BO Camp camping furnitureBo-Camp Urban Outdoor Folding Camp Storage

Blurring the line between camping gear and homewares are Dutch company Bo-Camp. Their Urban Outdoor range is an innovative collection of camping products packed full of stylish pieces that look just as good whether used at home and in the garden or on a camping trip.

Camping purists will often look down their noses at trendy camp gear, regarding it sniffily as ‘style over substance’, but that really couldn’t be further from the case. Items in the Urban Outdoor range are designed to be tough and durable as well as being practical and foldable for easy transportation; they just happen to look great too.

Go Outdoors

If ever there was a camping range made for us, this is it, so if you’ve not seen the Bo-Camp Urban Outdoor range we urge you to take a look at it.

NEWS | Top Picks From The Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show 2019

The 2019 Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show was another fantastic day out, with absolutely loads of things to see and do. We spent most of our time in the main camping hall and were treated to some fabulous new tents and camping gear. Read on for our top picks from the 2019 show!

Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show 2019

Hall 5 was the location to head towards for die hard camping fans, and this year I was particularly impressed by the layout. In between the usual stands were little areas designed to look like outdoors camp sites, including some lovely design touches like campfires and even real plants and leaves which really helped to bring a feel of the outdoors to the show, and it also provided lots of little spaces for guests to sit down for a while.

We loved little touches this year like this campfire

Our Top 3 Picks From The Show

  2. Vango Shangri La 15cm Double SIM
  3. Bo-Camp Urban Outdoor Relax Chair Bloomsbury

Bo-Camp

We’ve talked about Dutch brand Bo-Camp before, and absolutely adore their range of design-led camping gear. Their Urban Outdoor range consists of stylish storage and camp furniture that use wood and contemporary fabrics. The result is a range that looks very different to the usual bog-standard camp gear available and we particularly liked the Bo Camp Bloomsbury Relax chair which is one of our top 3 picks from the show.

Robens

Another of my top picks from the show has to be the new Robens Trapper Twin tent. I own the original Robens Trapper Tent which I used a lot last year and it’s fantastic, but the Twin is my idea of camping heaven. All the practicality of a modern tent but with the aesthetic of a more traditional bell tent.

The new Robens Aero Yurt tent sleeps up to 8 people, making it ideal for families and groups and provides heaps of space and practical features. For the same footprint of a bell tent, you get heaps more usable space though thanks to the high sides.

Go Outdoors

Here at Camping with Style we’ve been big fans of fishing beds for some time, and my carp fishing bed remains my first choice for solo camping trips of more than a day or two. They are exceptionally comfortable and it’s great to see that Robens have cottoned on and bought out their own Tala camp bed and having tested it out, I can confirm it’s super comfortable!

Vango

We’re lifelong fans of UK camping brand Vango thanks to their extensive camping range which always combines great technical features with a really competitive price point. It was really great to see so many camping manufacturers moving away from plastic and extending their wood camp furniture ranges still further.

The Vango Bamboo camp tables below include grooves cut into them, designed to hold wine glasses. Brilliant!

It was also great to see some new Vango tents, including the Camping Awards 2019 winner, the enormous Vango Anatara TC XL, a spacious polycotton Airbeam tent aimed squarely at serious family campers that can sleep up to 8 people.

Another tent that caught our eye was the Vango Galaxy 300 tent shown above, aimed at those who need lightweight camping gear but still want a decent amount of space.

Vango Shangri La SIM doubleVango Shangri La Double SIM

The Vango Shangri La SIM is another one of my top 3 picks from the show. At a whopping 15cm it’s super comfortable and top of my wishlist for camping trips this year!

Outwell

Outwell have long lead the field in terms of quality family camping, and this year their range was packed full of practical, yet design-led tents and accessories, particularly in their camp furniture ranges. We particularly loved the comfy and good looking Outwell Sardis Lake double camp chair, shown below and the Sandsend camp chair also pictured below.

There were some great show deals on the Outwell stand too including the Montana 6P Tent below, and the Outwell Stonelake 7ATC tent, an award winning “Best Large Family Tent 2019” was also on offer at the show.

Quest Leisure

It was good to see several traditional bell tents on the Quest stand, including a dinky little 3m bell tent, a stunning Emperor bell tent and the Quest Elite Toureg tent, something I’ve been wanting to see for a couple of years now, and I was very impressed by the space inside and the fact they look easier to erect than an Emperor bell tent.

Coleman

Coleman continues to pioneer the use of blackout material in their tents, and they really work, whilst I thought that the Coleman Packaway table would be great for family campers short on space and found the bench style seating to be surprisingly sturdy.

Other Great Finds

As well as picks from some established names, we were also happy to see some great camping and outdoor accessories and even a trailer tent for bikes.

Gentle Tent B Turtle

The innovative B Turtle is an inflatable trailer tent for bikes that weighs 29kg and is referred to as a microcaravan.

Outdoor Gang Camp Coolers

We loved the funky look of these outdoor camping nd garden coolers from Outside Gang. With a bamboo top that can be used as a kitchen work surface, the interior can be filled with ice to keep drinks and food cool.

HyTensil Camp Cutlery

We’re big fans of HyTensil reusable camp cutlery and it was nice to see them exhibiting their range, with some exciting new products in development. Find out more about HyTensil cutlery here.

Hydra Light Super Cell Camping Lanterns

These clever lanterns really caught our attention as they are powered by special cells that are activated using water. Find out more about Hydra Cell Super Cell lanterns.

Sevylor Inflatable Kayaks

It was great to see Devylor kayaks at the show, I’ve got the Sevylor Riviera and love it, though the Sevylor Madison really took my fancy.

Zempire Monstamat

It was great to see an incresing number of SIMs aimed at family campers rather than the backpacking market, and at 10cm the Monstamat SIM from Zempire makes a comfortable choice.
