Outbacker Firebox Tent Stove from Bell Tent Boutique

Outbacker® 'Firebox' Tent Stove

Outbacker® ‘Firebox’ Tent Stove
£169.99 from Bell Tent Boutique
Buy it here

Features

  • Lightweight, portable log burner (12kg)
  • Glass window in door
  • 60mm stainless steel flue pipe with built in spark arrestor
  • Square stove with slide-out grate
  • Flue sections can be packed away and stored inside
  • Folding legs
  • Optional accessories including a water boiler available

Outbacker® 'Firebox' Tent StoveThe stove with all of the flue pipes ready to be assembled

What we thought

We were expecting the stove to be bigger and heavier, but when it arrived we were very pleasantly surprised by it’s portability. It also comes with a bag, making it perfect for transporting to and from the campsite.

Our bell tent already has a flashing kit fitted and the canvas has already been specially treated, but even so, when it comes to using a wood burner, we don’t take any chances. A previous wood burner we’ve used came with a metal plate that the burner stood in, which provided a bit of added security in case anything hot were to fall out with the door open.

Putting the Outbacker® 'Firebox' Tent Stove togetherThe removable ash grate

The Outbacker doesn’t come with a metal plate to sit on, so we placed it on top of a rubber mat, with two fire-retardant treated rag rugs over the top, just to be on the safe side, though once lit however, there really is no need to open the door and risk anything falling out.

We removed all the flue pipes from inside the stove, folded out the legs at the bottom and aligned it roughly beneath our flashing kit before slotting the flue pipes together.

The fold out legs at the base of the Outbacker® 'Firebox' Tent StoveFolding out the bottom legs

SLotting the flue into place

Initially we were slightly bamboozled, as each of the flue sections has a thin end and a large end, so the process of slotting them together seemed quite straight forward, until we ended up with two thin ends, and then two thick ends…then we noticed a missing flue section with two thick ends, added that, and bingo, the flue was made.

Fitting the Outbacker® 'Firebox' Tent StovePushing the spark arrestor through the flashing kit

Ready to use with a fire log insideAll set up and ready to use

Once set up, we waited for nightfall and the temperature to drop before popping in a fire log and lighting it. There is a little glass window on the front of the door so you can see how the fire is doing once lit, and there’s a circular vent on the door too which can be opened and closed to control airflow. We noticed an orange glow in the first section of flue, and realised it was burning too hot, so we completely closed off the vent which brought the temperature back down a little.

Burning stove inside bell tent

With our enormous 6m bell, the stove didn’t take up too much space, and using one fire log (£1.99 from B&M) we enjoyed over 3 hours of heat, producing a noticeable increase in temperature, and glorious warmth when snuggled up next to it.

The Verdict

Lighter and smaller to transport than you might think, the Outbacker Firebox is ideal for bell tent owners who don’t want to be restricted to camping in the summer months, or for those who’d like to create a cosy refuge on chilly evenings, and we can’t recommend it enough.

Once you have your flashing kit in place (you can purchase a flashing kit separately if your bell tent doesn’t already have a opening), it’s quick and easy to set up and we found it very effective at increasing the temperature inside our bell tent. The removable ash grate made it easy to clean, and we think it makes a brilliant addition to our camping set up.

Outbacker® 'Firebox' Tent Stove installed in our tent

Stove set up with our carbon monoxide alarm, fire blanket, fire extinguiser and heat proof gloves close by

If you are thinking of getting a wood burner you’ll need to find out whether your tent has is fire retardant. If it isn’t you can buy a spray to treat the fabric yourself. We also strongly recommend that you buy a small fire extinguisher and a carbon monoxide alarm and please remember, that you should ensure your flue is fitted correctly and that your tent is still ventilated during use. Find more general advice on using a wood burner inside a bell tent here.

Kärcher OC3 Portable Cleaner Review

Karcker OC3 portable washer

Clean boots, thanks to the Kärcher OC3

Kärcher OC3 Portable Cleaner
£129.99
Buy it here

Need to know

  • Lighweight and compact
  • 4-litre water tank
  • 5 bar pressure
  • Integrated lithium-ion battery
  • Spray gun and hose stored internally when not in use
  • Additional attachments available to purchase separately

What we thought

With an extremely muddy January walk still fresh in our minds (I didn’t know walking boots could attract that much mud!), when we were offered the chance to review the new Kärcher OC3 Portable Cleaner I jumped at the chance. Thankfully I’m happy to report that our days of dabbing ineffectively at muddy boots with a tissue are now over.

My boots after cleaning them

Now firstly, I need to make a confession: I am mildly obsessed with pressure washers. It’s a bit weird I know, but I used to have one of the large Kärcher pressure washers for cleaning my car, patio etc and I absolutely loved it, there’s something that’s just so satisfying about using them! Anyway, when the dinky little OC3 arrived I wasn’t sure how powerful it would be given it’s battery operated and I’m used to pretty heavy duty pressure washers.

A few days later we went camping and pitched in a muddy field, and later that afternoon we went on a walk around Delamere Forest, giving us the perfect opportunity to find out exactly what the OC3 is capable of.

Karcker OC3 portable washer

Packed in the back of the car for a recent camping trip

The next day when we got home, we went for a local walk through Brook Wood and across a muddy field, we both used the Kärcher OC3 when we got back (see our video below) and it coped brilliantly.

Operation is really simple. The 4 litre tank is filled by lifting the large rubber cap on the top of the tank and then pressed back into place. The only minor gripe I have is with the big rubber stopper on the top is sometimes a bit of a faff to pop into place. To turn the unit on, there’s a large button on the font and a light comes on to show you it’s on. Grab the spray head, press the trigger and off you go.

Rather than tell you it cleaned our boots really well, it’s easier to just show you.

The verdict

The OC3 is a brilliant little device that’s extremely capable. Ideal for getting rid of mud when you’re out and about, making it perfect for campers, walkers and in particular dog owners. Whilst camping, we also found that the OC3 was brilliant for blasting bird poo off our canvas tent, so we’ll definitely be taking it with us every time we go camping and out walking.

With the Kärcher OC3 in the boot of my car I now positively welcome muddy boots!

Northern Star Tepees Share The Story Of Their British Tepee Company

Canvas bell tents have become increasingly popular over the last few years, but tepees are still pretty novel, so when we came across British tent copmany, Northern Star Tepees, we were keen to find out more.

Northern Star Tepees specialise in traditional, canvas, single pole tepees with a modern twist. All of their tepees are high quality and very easy to put up, offering something that bit different. Here’s what owner Florianne told us.

Northern Star Tepee Tents

We are a family who love camping in the Northern English countryside, but we preferred a retro feel. We tried the popular bell tent but it wasn’t quite the vibe we were looking for. Although there are other single pole tepees on the markets, we decided none matched all our criteria.

We wanted a traditional canvas tent with up to date modern conveniences like windows, fly mesh and zipped in PVC ground sheets, so we worked with our manufacturer to create our own. With our tepees, you can have the experience of traditional camping in a beautiful space but with all the modern conveniences.

Northern Star Tepee Tents UK

Need to know

Our Northern Star Tepee is based on the Sibley tent, invented by the American military officer Henry Hopkins Sibley in 1856. We’ve made a few adjustments that suit the modern traditional camper but it is essentially the same bit of kit. Tried and tested over the years by some of the world’s most intrepid explorers this tent design is rugged, practical and well…just super cool!

Tent features

All of our Tepees come with a 12 months quality guarantee and have a heavy duty zipped in ground sheet with waterproof zipper and PVC water flap… Because we know that it can rain 24 seven on your holiday.

Our 4, 5 and 6 metre tepees have our unique design roll up/peg out fly screened zipped and canvas windows, allowing you different levels of privacy and flooding your living space with light. They have a zippable fly screen door, study marquee pegs for canvas skirt and guy ropes, roomy zip up canvas bags (no more stuffing it into a sack bag!), 5mm reflective, sturdy, and heavy duty guy ropes. We are also the only UK suppliers of 3 metre children’s tepees that are perfect as permanent instalments in the garden or for solo camping.

Tepee tents for kids and solo campers

Aside from tepees, we also sell 285gsm and 350gsm walkabout dining shelters, and traditional UK made hand forged cooking bowls, woks, traditional Indian kadai sets, swing grill, and fire pits. We also have a range of Falcon enamelware camping cooking equipment, such as tumblers, mugs, trays, teapots, and deep plates in a variety of colours.

We also do private hire for events such as boutique festivals, parties, weddings and graduations, fully furnished or not.

The North Face Women’s Drew Peak Hoodie Review

The North Face Drew Peak Hoodie

The North Face Women’s Drew Peak Hoodie
£45 in store at Ultimate Outdoors

Features

  • Draw cord hood
  • Front kangaroo style pocket
  • 100% cotton
  • Ribbed cuffs and hem

The Verdict

I’d been looking for something that would keep me cosy in the tent ruing our early spring camping trips, and a weekend away in Nottingham saw us end up in Ultimate Outdoors.

The North Face Drew Peak Hoodie

There were some great offers in store (including waterproof over-trousers which we both bought a pair of), and I also spotted The Drew Peak hoodie. I love bright colours so when I spotted this hoodie in lime green and turqoise I immediately fell in love with it.

The North Face Drew Peak Hoodie

I prefer a longer length to my hoodies as I simply find them more practical, and don’t want something that will ride up and reveal a bare back each time I bend over. The Drew Peak Hoodie has good length on it, nice long sleeves and is fleece lined. It’s warm without being too bulky, so as well as being practical for camping and spending time outdoors, it’s also ideal for pulling on at home and snuggling up in.

The North Face Drew Peak Hoodie

The North Face logo in a bright lime colour is embroidered, so there’s no need to worry about it fading over time. It’s a fabulous jumper with a true to size fit, that I thoroughly recommend and it’s currently £45 down from £65 at Ultimate Outdoors.

Buy The North Face Women’s Drew Peak Hoodie.
