Enki Stove Wild – The New Portable Camping Stove

The Enki Stove Wild, claims to be an outdoor stove like you’ve never seen before, so naturally, we had to find out more.

Enki Stove Wild Camping Stove

The Enki Stove Wild is essentially a portable pyrolytic camping stove that’s designed to run on any kind of biomass – in short, you can chuck in and burn pretty much anything dry and organic.

The stove is powerful and can be used to cook and grill efficiently, without the need to use lots of wood or gas. There’s even a clever solar charger that you can plug right in to the Enki Stove Wild, so you can power your USB devices from it, making it perfect for camping.

How does it work?

The stove transforms fuel into gas instead of burning it directly, and this process provides you with a clean, stable and smokeless flame. If like me you can’t pretend to understand what the heck that really means, there’s a great video here, that explains all.

Enki Stove wild biomass camp stove

The Enki Stove Wild starts at €229 and you can find out more about the Enki Stove WILD here.

Why Taking Children Camping Is So Important

Over the last few years there have been a large number of studies (see references at the end of this article) that have highlighted the fact that children now spend a shorter amount of time outdoors and are less connected to the natural world. In contrast, research has also highlighted the many benefits that spending time outdoors in a natural environment can provide for kids.

Children and nature

Research by the National Trust found that children spend only half as much time playing outside as their parents did. Whilst in another study by Mothercare, around 80% of parents admitted that they had never taken their children star gazing or fishing, despite expressing a desire for their children to spend more time outdoors.

A Generation Growing Up Disconnected From Nature

If children grow up disconnected from nature, then it stands to reason that they will place less value on the natural world, and that’s bad news as far as conserving our countryside goes. A view echoed by George Monibot writing for the Guardian, who recently said that if children lose their connection to the natural world, they simply won’t fight for it.

Children benefit from spending time outdoors

It’s not just about raising a generation of children who care about conservation though. Nature promotes wellbeing and reduces stress, and the fact is, more children than ever are now overweight, unhappy, anxious and even clinically depressed according to research findings from the Good Childhood Inquiry. Findings like this are more than anecdotal, and it would seem that screen culture, increased urbanisation and a disconnection from the real, natural world are at least partly to blame.

When I started this blog, I made a pledge to spend more time outdoors. The benefits I’ve enjoyed as a result of doing exactly that, have made it clear to me that getting outdoors is far more than just a choice in how to spend my leisure time. It’s crucial for my emotional wellbeing, and with research backing up the ‘nature is good for you’ theory, I’m not alone in my belief.

Kids and nature

Why You Should Take Your Children Camping

1. Camping helps children to develop a sense of adventure

Going camping, even if it’s just for one night is fun. A new environment, unfamiliar sights and sounds, other kids to meet and play with, a tent to help put up and sleeping under the stars all make for a fun-filled adventure.

A sense of adventure is one of the qualities that ensures a life remains open and full of possibilities; promoting the positive outlook that underpins good mental health.

2. Camping builds resilience

Children rarely move out of their comfort zone these days. With more children spending time indoors than ever before, their environment, for many, is predictable, secure and closely monitored. Whilst stability is beneficial, spending time indoors and constantly stimulated won’t help a child to grow in confidence or develop resilience.

Working out where to pitch, helping to put up a tent, finding the campsite shop and being sent to pick up supplies, dealing with adversity (broken poles, forgotten tent pegs, bad weather), by comparison are all great ways of building resilience. When children learn that they can effectively deal with adversity, they become more robust and confident individuals.

3. Camping gives children the freedom to explore, boosting creativity

Having the freedom to play, explore and generally behave the way children should is one of the vital elements missing from modern life for many children. Parents rarely let their children out of their sight these days, preferring them to visit a friends house to giving them to freedom to play at the park unsupervised.

Family-friendly campsites provide a safe, and relatively secure environment for children to play and explore in, giving them a sense of freedom. This freedom, combined with a more natural environment is a great way to boost creativity; instead of relying on a tablet or smartphone for entertainment, children use their imagination to play games and entertain themselves; something they typically don’t need to do when they’re at home.

4. Camping  brings children closer to nature

There is compelling evidence to support the claim that many children are now suffering from ‘nature defecit disorder‘, with many being unable to identify the most basic flora and fauna. According to a 2008 National Trust survey, only 1 in 3 children were able to identify a Magpie; but I’m willing to bet that all of them would be able to correctly identify the McDonalds or Facebook logo.

Spending time outdoors brings children closer to the natural world, and if they live in an urban environment, it is particularly important to ensure that a proportion of their free-time activities provide the chance to experience some of the wonder and beauty of nature.

Developing a love and respect of nature is much easier to do if children get to spend time outdoors, and camping is an excellent way to immerse children in the natural world.

Children and animals

Take your children camping – you owe it to them

Although my daughter is now grown up, I took her camping from the age of 2 and she always loved it. These days, whenever we go camping there are always happy children running around the campsite. They are having fun, smiling, laughing and using their imaginations to fill their time, the way we used to do when we were kids. The stress relieving impact of such freedom and the simple happiness it promotes can’t be underestimated, and I can’t imagine many children who would not benefit from the camping experience.

The stress relieving impact of such freedom and the simple happiness it promotes can’t be underestimated

So if you’ve never been, or if you are trying to find more ways of encouraging your children to spend time outdoors; why not lead by example and take them camping.

Therm-a-rest tent fly sheet clipped in place

Technical features

  • Milatex 3000/3000 fabric
  • Waterproof, breathable and windproof
  • Warmth without weight
  • Herringbone printed Tafetta lining
  • Fully taped seams
  • Adjustable rollaway hood
  • Scooped back adjustable hem
  • Adjustable cuffs and waist
  • Inner map pocket

Tog24 Jacket Review

The verdict

The Tog24 Men’s Brook Milatex Jacket is classed as a lightweight jacket, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it won’t keep you warm.

The Jacket is lightweight, comfortable and having worn it for many months and out on several walks, it’s been brilliant. The fit of the jacket means there is plenty of room to wear a couple of layers underneath it, without it being baggy and I really love the way it looks.

My usual cold weather walking attire consists of a base layer under a thin fitted fleece, with a jacket on top. With this Jacket I have been warm enough to take off my fleece layer, even when out walking on chilly Autumn days.

Brook Milatex Jacket

I’m a little obsessed with pockets on Jackets, and this jacket has plenty, all of them useful and in sensible places. For instance the “hip” pockets sit below the waist strap on my rucksack, meaning they remain easily accessible while carrying a rucksack.

The roll-away hood isn’t like most similar hoods on other jackets that I’ve come across, this one looks like a fixed part of the jacket, as opposed to others that are very thin. Once it’s rolled away, it doesn’t look bulky or clumsy around the collar either.

I’m really impressed with this Jacket and having worn it for a good few months now, it’s kept me warm and dry every time. It’s smart enough to wear as a regular Jacket, but it’s also robust enough to wear when out walking. It’s simply brilliant and is now a firm favourite of mine. It’s well worth the price and is an excellent buy.

Milatex Tog24 Jacket Review

Summary

  • The styling of this jacket makes it incredibly versatile, I can wear it to work and when dressed more casually when out for hikes
  • Warm without being bulky
  • Exceptional value for money (the jacket is currently half price at £69.95)

Thank you to Tog24 for supplying the featured product for us to test.

Great Reasons To Consider A Caravan Staycation

We love to travel and see distant shores, but whenever possible we like to explore what’s right here on our doorstep in the UK. For many, choosing a holiday or mini-break here in the UK is more popular than ever, and staycations are increasingly popular, becoming the savvy way to enjoy a break.

Over the last couple of years we’ve made a concerted effort ourselves to explore more of the UK, cutting down on overseas holidays in order to free up annual leave. We’ve been on heaps of fun camping road trips that have taken us down to the UKs best beach in Devon, and have allowed us climb mountains in Scotland and Snowdon in Wales; things we’d never done before!

We’ve stayed in everything from static caravans to glamping pods and of course, in our own tent, but opting for a touring or static caravan can provide the ultimate in holiday freedom, meaning you can get away whatever the weather.

We’ve recently found the below fab infographic which has been created by Towergate Insurance. Allowing you to chart the popularity of the staycation, the infographic highlights some of the benefits and relative costs of choosing a caravan holiday in the UK over traveling to the continent.

We were amazed at the amount you could save, as well as some of the amazing places to visit that were only a short way away from our home town.

We don’t know about you, but we’re already planning our next staycation and hope to head back up to Scotland early next year.

A Walk Around Whitby in Yorkshire

Whitby Harbour

Like the town of Glastonbury, Whitby is a place that holds a special fascination for me. It could be the old hippy in me, but It always feels like there is a special vibe there. We don’t get up there too often, but we recently spent a long weekend with friends during the biannual Whitby Goth Weekend.

Whitby Harbour

Shots of Tequila for breakfast, some stunning elaborate outfits and a friendly party atmosphere made for a fantastic weekend, but I found little gaps in the partying to explore Whitby and snap a few photos.

Whitby Harbour Lobster Pots

We walked miles, and I was very glad to have my new Heavenly Feet boots (from JD Williams of all places). They proved to be much more comfy than my well broken in Dr. Marten boots and with a soft furry lining they kept me snug despite wind so strong that I was almost knocked off my feet and fierce hail storms!

JD Williams Boots

Whitby harbour is beautiful. To one side lies old Whitby a maze of quirky shops and tea rooms, and on the other, the newer part of town. The walk up to the iconic Whitby Abbey was bracing to say the least!

Whitby Abbey Graveyard

The graveyard at Whitby Abbey

The Abbey is said to have inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and it dominates the Whitby skyline. Despite the freezing weather, the 199 step climb up the cliff was definitely worth it.

This time we rented a cottage with friends for the weekend, but we’re looking forward to going back again next summer and returning to camp at Hooks House Farm in Robin Hoods Bay.

Sleep in Style With Sleeping Beauties Pretty Patterned Sleeping Bags

We couldn’t wait to tell you about these gorgeous new patterned sleeping bags from Sleeping Beauties, and hope that their beautiful designs will brighten up a dull Tuesday afternoon!

Sleeping Beauties glamping sleeping bags

Ideal for festivals, glamping and general camping use, there are various designs to choose from, and fundraising is currently underway to bring a double version to market. Sleeping Beauties are priced from around £65 and they come in a variety of different designs. Choose from pretty florals inspired by the Great British Summertime, retro florals inspired by the Coachella festival and more psychedelic designs inspired by Ibiza. They are made from 100% Cotton, and all of the prints are original; designed by London-based designer, Leah.
