A Walk Around Whitby in Yorkshire

Whitby Harbour

Like the town of Glastonbury, Whitby is a place that holds a special fascination for me. It could be the old hippy in me, but It always feels like there is a special vibe there. We don’t get up there too often, but we recently spent a long weekend with friends during the biannual Whitby Goth Weekend.

Shots of Tequila for breakfast, some stunning elaborate outfits and a friendly party atmosphere made for a fantastic weekend, but I found little gaps in the partying to explore Whitby and snap a few photos.

We walked miles, and I was very glad to have my new Heavenly Feet boots (from JD Williams of all places). They proved to be much more comfy than my well broken in Dr. Marten boots and with a soft furry lining they kept me snug despite wind so strong that I was almost knocked off my feet and fierce hail storms!

Whitby harbour is beautiful. To one side lies old Whitby a maze of quirky shops and tea rooms, and on the other, the newer part of town. The walk up to the iconic Whitby Abbey was bracing to say the least!

The Abbey is said to have inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and it dominates the Whitby skyline. Despite the freezing weather, the 199 step climb up the cliff was definitely worth it.

This time we rented a cottage with friends for the weekend, but we’re looking forward to going back again next summer and returning to camp at Hooks House Farm in Robin Hoods Bay.
