Magix Photostory Deluxe Image & Video Slideshow Software

Magix Photostory DeluxeWhat is it?

What did we think?

As I blogger I’m yet to find the perfect piece of software that will allow me to easily create slideshows. There are endless online tools, I’ve paid for subscriptions for tools like WeVideo (admittedly more of a video editing tool) in the past, but the downside is that tools like this are cloud based meaning limited storage and the need to upload all of your media before you can do anything with it. which on a standard-speed connection can takes hours.

Magix Photostory Deluxe screen grab

Getting started

When Magix Photostory Deluxe arrived I immediately worried I’d not be able to install it, as my Dell Inspiron laptop doesn’t have a CD drive so I was relived to find a link to download the software (736.76MB), and to activate it I simply entered the serial number included in the box.

Interface & usability

I’ve used a lot of creative software including music creation, design and video editing tools in the past, including things like Photoshop, Illustrator, iMovie, Ableton, Adobe Premier Pro, Flash (remember that?!) and loads more besides. I’m used to working in layers and dealing with a lot of different tracks, and Photostory Deluxe does things simply by providing you with a maximum of 8 tracks to work with, and allowing you to drag and drop effects and transitions into the timeline.Magix Photostory Deluxe screen grab

For those new to video and slideshow editing, I’m sure 8 tracks wouldn’t be an issue, but after my recent holiday I had 30 or so video clips of varying lengths that I wanted to edit together along with images, but I couldn’t import them all into Photostory Deluxe as there simply weren’t enough tracks available. That said it doesn’t claim to be a video editing tool so for dedicated video editing, you’d be better off choosing an alternative tool such as Magix Movie Edit Pro if that’s the primary use you have in mind.

Despite the limited number of tracks, I found the benefits came through intuitive use and an interface that was easy to understand and navigate around. In use I decided to change my project and focus on still photos – making the most of what the software was actually designed for.

Adding photographs and video is simple, and adding transitions, it’s simply as case of choosing the effect you want, and dragging it into the little square in between each photograph. By default the time for each photograph is set to 7 seconds, which I found a bit too long, so I moved it down to 5 seconds.

Magix Photo Designer 7

Photograph editing

There are limited editing options for each photograph that allows you to edit photographs quickly and easily inside the software. I’d already edited my photographs in Photoshop ahead of importing however, so didn’t need to use this function, but had a play around with it anyway. If you choose the edit option Magix Photo Designer 7 opens up allowing you to make a good number of changes, including adjusting things like brightness and contrast, red eye reduction and image resizing, Ideal if you don’t have Photoshop or similar.

You can switch between multiple views, and I preferred the timeline view, though initially when adding things like titles and music tracks (my sister is a musician and composed a track for me), it wasn’t always clear if they had been added or indeed where in the timeline, so I found myself scrolling left to right up and down the timeline quite a lot.

Magix Photostory Deluxe Timeline Editing View

Within about 45 minutes I got the hang of using the software without reading any instructions or using any of their tutorials so the learning curve isn’t very steep at all.

Whilst it handles video, it’s best used primarily for short clips you’ve already edited down elsewhere. I really liked how easy it was to combine video with photographs and I also really like the wide variety of special effects and transitions available to choose from.

Here’s a very simple slideshow I created manually using an audio composition by my sister.

What I most liked

  • There are lots of different transition and special effects to choose from and some can be combined too, producing really cool results
  • Music tracks are available to choose form, or you can import your own
  • Easy to use, but enough advanced features to allow you to create multiple slideshows that are different every time
  • You can very quickly and easily auto generate a slideshow, just select the images and the sofrware does everything else

Experience Peace and Tranquility at Cledan Valley Glamping In Mid Wales

Honeymoon Yurt at Cledan Valley GlampingThe honeymoon yurt down by the river at Cledan Valley

Where did we go?

Cledan Valley Glamping
Powys, Mid Wales
Our stay 19th – 21st May 2017

The Lowdown

Cledan Valley is a glamping site in mid-Wales which retains a wild feel but provides a range of comfortable accommodation and facilities. From bell tents down by the river to tipi’s and cosy but spacious yurts and a shepherds hut, there are plenty of glamping options to choose from. Everything is nicely spread out too providing just enough privacy which enhances the feeling of natural seclusion.

What did we think?

This was our first time staying in a yurt and we loved every second of it! We definitely felt much more snug than when we sleep in a bell tent, with the yurt retaining heat much better, thanks to the addition of the wood burning stove which made for relaxed and cosy evenings.

The bed inside our yurt at Cledan Valley, Wales

The valley that the glamping site is located within is stunning and very peaceful. The only sounds are of nature; from the cacophony of evening bird song to honking geese and neighing horses; it’s one of those rare places where the moment you arrive you instantly feel a sense of calm.

Cledan Valley woodland

Facilities inside the Red Kite Yurt that we stayed in were superb. Despite it being just the 2 of us, It’s actually big enough to sleep a family of 5, containing a comfy double bed and a double bunkbed (capable of sleeping a further 3). As well as the wood burner inside, there are comfy chairs and a fabulous handy little kitchen area, making self-catering easy. With a double gas burning stove we found plenty of pots, pans, plates, cutlery etc. and cooking in the yurt was a convenient alternative to having to use the car in order to eat out.

Outside of the yurt there is plenty of seating, a firepit and even a barbecue. Sitting outside and watching the sun go down was a pleasure, and the sky is exceptionally dark here too, making star gazing a real treat.

Outside looking into the Red Kite yurtInside the Red Kite yurt

The showers were hot, the facilities clean and for a small fee, there was a ready supply of firewood, which meant the yurt never felt cold.

We always like to get out and about when we stay somewhere to get a better feel for the area, so we did a bit of research before we arrived and identified Hafren Forest and it’s various waterfalls as somewhere we definitely wanted to visit, and we weren’t disappointed. You can read all about our walk in Hafren Forest here.

If you are looking for a relaxing break amidst beautiful scenery but don’t want to compromise on comfort, then Cledan Valley is the perfect choice. It’s rare to find a small glamping site like this that can effectively cater for a range of different needs, yet Cledan Valley with it’s romantic Honeymoon yurt is just as perfect for couples as it is for families wanting to spend quality time together (we recommend a stay in a towering tipi!).

Special touches

  • We loved the treasure hunts provided for both adults and kids.
  • All of the accommodation types provide cosy bedding, and we liked that there are additional blankets provided too.
  • Hampers, treats and special occasions can all be catered for, just arrange any extras you’ll want in advance.
  • The communal yurt is a great idea, providing a large space that quests are welcome to use, and we made good use of the bird and wildlife identification books we found there.
  • Ice boxes and ice blocks are provided for guests to use.

Need to know

  • We loved the warm welcome we got at the Red Lion pub a few miles away, a traditional pub with great value food.
  • Visiting the Waterfalls in Hafren Forest is a must for a walk if you stay at Cledan Valley, you’ll find easy walking routes for all abilities and keep your eyes peeled for Ospreys!
  • Take binoculars to watch the Red Kites circling directly above the glamping site.
  • Elan Valley was on our list to visit, but we simply ran out of time – you’ll find heaps of things to do there from gentle waterside walks to mountain biking.

Walking The Blaenhafren Falls Trail at Hafren Forest, Wales

We were glamping in mid-Wales at Cledan Valley, near Carno and a bit of research prior to our stay revealed Hafren Forest and it’s many waterfalls to be close by. This was our first decent walk since I hurt my ankle so It was awesome to be back outdoors and exploring a new area. Whilst the weather wasn’t perfect, it did stay mostly dry so we were able to take plenty of photographs, and were even treated to some glimpses of blue sky.

Hafren Forest walk in Wales

Hafren Forest walk in Wales

Beautiful scenery and easy to follow trails made this walk a real pleasure. We chose to do two circular walking routes, taking in the short 2 mile Severn Break It’s Neck fall trail, and then on to a second 3 mile scenic trail through the heart of the forest, which took us on to Blaenhafren Falls.

Hafren Forest walk in Wales

There’s a free carpark at the visitor centre, along with some toilets and signs detailing the various routes. There are walks for all ages and abilities to choose from, including the 0.5 mile Cascades trail, which is a short but pretty walk that is also wheelchair accessible. For those looking for something a bit more demanding (but still requires zero navigation skills) there’s the option of the 7 mile Source of the Severn Trail.

We finish the circular walk to Severn Break It’s Neck falls and arrive back at the visitor centre, the starting point of all of the sign-posted walks. We decide to do a second walk and choose the blue trail which takes us taking us through stunning pine forest, following the river Severn up to Blaenhafren Falls.

We walked for less than 3 hours in total and found Hafren Forest was the perfect destination for us; no need to plan your walk in advance the trails are so easy to follow that it makes the ideal choice for families and novice walkers. The stunning scenery made for a truly relaxing afternoon, thoroughly recommend if you’re looking for easy short walks in the area.

Power On The Go With The Varta 16,000 mAh Power Bank

Varta Power Bank Size

What is it?

Varta Power Bank 16,000 mAh
£29.52 Buy it here

Features

  • Compact and powerful 16,000 mAh Li-Ion battery
  • 3 x USB Out ports: 2.1A and 2.4A
  • 5 blue LED gauge for charge and discharge indication
  • Short-circuit, over-discharge, over-heating protection

What did we think?

We’ve previous used the smaller Varta 5200 mAh Power Bank and have found it brilliant for taking out when walking. We tend to run down phone batteries fairly quickly. If we are just pottering around then invariably we’ve got Pokemon Go running and when we are out walking, we always use My Tracks to map the walk and are using using View Ranger or the OS Maps app at the same time to follow a route.

Whilst the smaller power bank is excellent and perfect for when we’re out and about, when it comes to weekend camping trips and long haul travel though, I was after something that would provide more than 2 full charges of my phone.

Varta Power Bank

Varta Power Bank USB Ports

The Varta 16,000 mAh Power Bank proved to be the ideal choice and we tested it recently on our trip to the Indian Ocean. With a 27 hour journey facing us using 5 different modes of transport, I wanted to make sure that I’d have ample power for my phone as I had films, podcasts and music stored on it to keep me occupied whilst traveling.

The power bank performed really well, with both myself and my partner using it during the long journey, and I found it to be quite quick to charge too compared to my old Power Monkey. I didn’t even bother to charge the unit from the mains again before our return journey home as it was still showing 4 LED lights on the front.

It states that the power bank can handle 5-6 charges and I can believe it. After we both used it again on the long journey home, it was still showing 2 LED lights when we arrived back at home.

We’ll definitely be taking this on future trips with us as it provides fast and reliable power, and is capable of a good 5 full smartphone charges.

5 Most Wanted – What’s On Our Outdoor& Camping Gear Radar

We spend a fortune on camping, outdoor gear and gadgets, and whilst we are lucky enough to get to test and keep some fabulous products, there are still plenty of cool and practical things left on our wish list! These are some of the items on our radar currently.

Garmin eTrex® Touch 25 Adventure Bundle (incl. GB 1:50K SD Map Card) £299.99

Garmin eTrex® Touch 25 Adventure Bundle

With a solo climb up Ben Lawers in Scotland coming up at the end of the month, not getting lost is pretty high on my list of priorities! Despite having an OS map for the area I’m not the best map reader in the world and a hand-held GPS is good for the confidence and is also handy for geocaching adventures. Find out more

Sevylor Madison Inflatable Kayak Kit £399.99

Sevylor Madison Inflatable Kayak Kit £399.99

We have a fabulous lake 10 minutes away from where we live and when we camp we’re usually next to water or right on the coast. There were plenty of occasions last year when I wished we had a kayak, and staying beside a Loch Tay at the end of the month would be perfect for some serious kayaking. Find out more

Leatherman Juice XE6 Pocket Multi Tool (Moss Green) £86.66

Leatherman Juice XE6 Pocket Multi Tool (Moss Green) £86.66

A decent pen knife or multitool is  camping must, and after 15 years of faithful service I lost my Leatherman Juice, and that’s made me sad. I’ve put off replacing it in the hope it would turn up, but a year on I think it’s time to face up to the fact it’s gone forever. Find out more

Eurohike 4 Shelf Collapsible Cupboard £45.00

Eurohike 4 Shelf Collapsible Cupboard £45.00

For short camping trips and weekends away with a smaller tent when space is at a premium, taking a full camp kitchen set up can be overkill. A small storage cupboard like this is versatile and takes up less space during transportation and once set up inside the tent. Find out more

MSR Ceramic 2.5L Pot £46.75

MSR Ceramic Camping Pot

We’ve used our compact camping saucepan to death, to the point that it’s battered and scratched and the lid has been bashed around so much, it no longer fits. I love camp cooking and a pot like this is perfect for campers who love to cook. Find out more
