Griffin Reserve 18,200 mAh Power Bank – Review

Griffin Reserve Power Bank 18,200 MhA

What is it?

Griffin Reserve Power Bank 18,200 mAh
Aailable in Black or Grey
£43 Buy it here

Technical details

  • Two USB ports: max-rate charge port -12 watts of power (5 volts at 2.4 amps); standard-rate charge port – 5 watts of power (5 volts at 1 amp)
  • Recharge from any wall charger, car charger or laptop with the include micro-USB charge cable
  • LED charge gauge
  • Smartphone – Up to 7.3 charges
  • Smartwatch – Up to 55 charges
  • Large Tablet – Up to 2.5 extra charges

What I thought

Use of the power bank did not get off to the best of starts it has to be said! The packaging states that the unit comes charged that it comes charged, but it didn’t, and it took nearly a day to fully charge, but once it was we were off!

I am a pretty heavy phone user, and need to recharge at least once in the day, and so I wanted to see how long it would keep me going for, without using anything else. The Griffin Reserve Power Bank looks like it means business, with a solid, simple design (no instructions included, and none needed).  Most importantly I was immediately impressed by how fast it charged up my phone, and how long it lasted – it kept my phone going for five days, and I was deliberately hammering it on usage.

Griffin Reserve Power Bank 18,200 MhA

It is bigger and heavier than I had realised, I don’t usually carry much with me when I’m out and about though – If it was with hiking or camping kit in a rucksack you probably wouldn’t notice, but if weight is an issue and you’re out hiking, it might be better left at base-camp than carried with you.

I decided to time the recharge time once I had totally run it down, and it too just over 9 hours to fully charge – this is going to be par for the course as there is a lot of battery to recharge, but it is worth bearing in mind, and charging it needs planning in advance, rather than a quick hour burst before you run out of the door.

If you’re out and about and on the go, one of the smaller Griffin Power Bank models might be more suitable for you.

Griffin Reserve Power Bank 18,200 MhA

The verdict

The charger was very impressive in terms of the sheer amount of charge in it and in how quickly it charges devices, but it is heavy and quite bulky – which is unavoidable as the charge has to have physical storage space.

We will be giving it another test run with two phones and two iPad to charge for a long weekend in August where the usage will be lower, and we can leave it in the tent during the day – and for camping I think this would be perfect.

Instinctively I feel that if I was doing serious walking, and was space limited, I might be tempted by taking a couple of smaller charge banks which would more easily fit into side pockets, that you could charge in parallel, but that may be false economy.

It is an impressive piece of kit, and at £43 it is good value for money too as well as being easy to use and it delivers what is promises.  I will certainly use it again and again.

Boutique Camping Star Canopy Bell Tent

Putting the Tent up

Getting the tent up was just as easy as any other bell tent we’ve used. After pegging out the bottom, there’s a single sturdy pole that pushes up inside the centre of the tent. Next there’s a sturdy A-frame in sections, that creates the opening for the huge front door. We loved that the door was so much taller than in other 5m bell tents (no bending to walk in and out!) and found the extra width really handy too.

We loved that the door was so much taller than in other 5m bell tents and found the extra width really handy too.

Due to the design of this tent and the addition of the canopy,  it means there’s an extra pole. The thin flexible pole was snapped quckily into place and easily threaded through the front seam to form the front of the canopy.

Inside the new Star Canopy Bell TentThe bright and airy interior, not quite as organgey/brown as the photos look!

The new bell tent design uses a combination of mainly sturdy webbing straps instead of traditional guy ropes, however, there are still 3 guy ropes on the front to keep the canopy in place. The whole set up process took no more than 20 minutes between the 2 of us, and now we’re familiar with it, I expect we’ll be able to get it up in around 15 minutes on future trips.

What we thought

Let’s be honest, running a blog like this means we get to try out more than our fair share of tents. As well as long-term tests of a plethora of modern tents, we’ve also been proud bell tent owners for several years now. It takes a lot to impress us generally, but we always appreciate good looks and great design that provides high levels of functionality and comfort. We’re delighted to report that the new Boutique Camping Star Bell Tent exceeded our expectations.

Boutique Camping Star Canopy Bell Tent

Inside the star canopy bell tent

During our camping trip we faced lots of different weather conditions, from blazing hot sunshine to 24 hours of torrential rain. During the rain, we did get a few wet patches, but nothing serious and certainly nothing we weren’t already expecting. As existing bell tent owners will know, canvas tents are only fully waterproof once they have been wet for the first time and dried out.

Despite the rain, it was still pretty warm. Usually keeping the half-moon window vents open during rain means you’re very likely to let a lot of water in, not so with this tent. The star canopy effectively acts like an umbrella, so you can keep the window vents open but you are still protected from rain.

Features that we loved

The built in front canopy

This is something we’ve never seen in a bell tent before and it provides a really useful covered space – invaluable in the UK when rain is an almost constant possibility!

The front canopy shown from the side

The star design is utterly genius

It means that in hot weather, you can open all of the ventilation windows to get the air flowing, but if it rains, you’ve got added protection as the points of the star offer additional cover from the rain. Brilliant!

Sturdy webbing instead of guy ropes

The sturdy webbing makes it easy to get even tensioning, and despite a couple of windy days, we didn’t need to re-peg or tighten anything as the webbing is designed to keep the tent standing firm, even in strong wind.

Star Bell Tent WebbingSturdy webbing instead of traditional guy ropes

Heavy duty tent pegs

We love the big strong heavy duty pegs that come with the tent, and you’ll find two kinds. A thinner smooth tent peg used to peg out the base of the tent, plus big heavy duty pegs for the guy ropes and webbbing, that keep the tent anchored firmly.

Generous door height

We’ve never been inside a 5m bell tent that didn’t require some degree of stooping or bending to get into. Usually the apex of the doorway is too low (I’m 5.6″) so bending is necessary. Not so with this beauty. The door way is a huge 2m high and 2.90cm wide. The extra height and width makes getting in and out of the tent a breeze, and makes it easy to get all of your camp furniture in and out.

Inside the new Star Canopy Bell TentInside the star canopy bell tent, showing our enormous Outwell Kitchen unit and double bed set up inside.

Internal space

Once inside a bell tent it can be surprising how much usable space is lost due to low sides and the sloping roof, especially if you use camp furniture. The sides of bell tents (i.e. the straight bit before the roof starts to slant) can vary greatly in height and most are pretty low. We found in this model however that as well as the half-moon window vents being a bit bigger, the height of the walls were also much more generous than usual, meaning more usable space.

Pros and Cons

ProsCons
  • It looks amazing
  • High quality, thick canvas
  • Sturdy webbing instead of guy ropes
  • Star canopy provides shelter from the sun/rain
  • High sides, means more usable internal space
  • Heavy duty pegs and funky purple guy ropes
  • Enormous doors (both tall and wide)
  • Great attention to detail, branded zippers, tension adjusters and carry bag
  • New 360 degree bug mesh
  • Can be put up by one person alone if necessary (though it is pretty heavy)
  • Window vents are larger than usual
  • Great at regulating temperature
  • Did we already mention that It looks amazing?
  • With the addition of the canopy the tent is slightly heavier than a standard 5m bell
  • In the morning the tent felt particularly bright
  • The tent does not have anchor points to fit an inner tent

Final Verdict

This is a genuinely stunning tent. Not only does it look gorgeous but it’s excellent quality, well made and sturdy. For those that are already bell tent converts, you’ll love the clever new design features in this tent that provide shelter from the sun and rain, extra stability from the webbing in bad weather, and more usable interior space. For those new to bell tents, this is a superb quality, industry-leading tent that provides a host of extra features over and above a standard bell tent.

We still adore our brightly coloured 6m rainbow bell tent, but for shorter camping trips, you can bet that this is the tent we’ll be taking with us from now on.

A big thank you to iBoutique Camping Camping who provided the featured tent for us to review.

Are You Looking For A Different Camping Experience? Try Bushcrafting!

We’re going to put our hands up here and admit that buscrafting is among our strongest skills here at Camping with Style! We’re delighted however to share with you some great advice on bushcraft from Rebecca at the brilliant Hiking Mastery blog.

Photo Credit: Active OutdoorsPhoto Credit: Active Outdoors

When many people think of camping, they probably think about glamping, or imagine a decked-out camper van that provides them with comfy beds, a bathroom, and a fully functioning kitchen. Not many people are willing to camp in a basic tent and cook all their food on a campfire.

Despite the popularity and obvious appeal of comfort camping, there’s still a large amount of joy to be had when going back to basics and  camping with only the bare necessities.

If you want to completely connect with nature and live off the land, being able to master bushcraft is a must.

What Is Bushcrafting?

In simple terms, bushcrafting is the ability to survive in the wild using skills you have developed, instead of depending on the items you bring for a camping trip. Also known as “wilderness skills”, bushcrafting requires mastery of a variety of skills.

Bushcrafting isn’t a new ideology. Before the invention of tents, grills, and prepackaged food, people were naturally bushcraft masters. Our ancestors had no choice but to respect and live off the land; building shelters, foraging, hunting, cleaning and cooking their own food. A far cry from modern camping!

Give bushcraft a try

Bushcrafting however is increasingly popular as more and more people attempt to connect with nature and feel like they are at one with the land. This is due to a variety of reasons, such as wanting to escape from technology or watching experts, like Ray Mears, on Television.

No matter what your reason is for being interested in bushcraft, it’s a valuable set of skills to have. Not only will it add something different to your camping experiences, but you might even find it saves your life one day! Furthermore, mastering bushcraft means becoming part of a small percentage of people who know how to live comfortably in any natural setting.

What Skills Are Required To Master Bushcrafting?

Don’t be fooled by experts such as Ray Mears though! They may make bushcrafting seem fun and easy, but it takes a lot of time and practice to master. You can’t just go into the woods for the weekend and expect to come back knowing everything about the subject.

Many people group bushcraft into five broad categories: food foraging, trapping/hunting game, water gathering/purifying, shelter building and fire building. However, for those who are brand new to bushcrafting, here is a more extensive break down of the skills you need to master:

Making A Camp

  • Fire Building
  • Shelter Building
  • Rope & Knot Skills

Finding Food

  • Foraging
  • Trapping/snares
  • Fishing

Preparing and Cooking Food

  • Gutting/Cleaning Fish
  • Butchering/Preparing Wild Game
  • Cooking Food
  • Preserving Food

Using Tools

  • Knives
  • Axes
  • Machetes
  • Saw

Finding Water

  • Filtering/Purifying
  • Storing

First Aid

  • Finding Natural Remedies
  • Emergency Skills

As you can see, bushcraft takes enormous effort to master. It’s more than just basic survival and camping skills. Bushcrafting is being able to live comfortably in nature without the help of anything you can purchase from a store, the exception being survival tools.

However, most experts recommend bushcraft beginners master the essential skills before learning the rest. What are the essential skills? Well, different experts have different opinions. Generally, building a shelter, building a fire, and finding food and water are good skills to learn first.

Camp fire

Bushcrafting Tools

There aren’t many tools used in bushcrafting. For example a compass isn’t usually considered a bushcrafting tool. However, the tools you are allowed to use are incredibly important, as they significantly improve your ability to hunt and build shelter.

The most common tool is a survival knife. They’re small and easy to carry. Bring the best survival knife with will be an enormous help. Knives are typically used for “lighter” tasks. For example, they are used to carve wood to make spoons, containers, and other utensils. They are also used to make traps and prepare food.

An axe is another helpful bushcrafting tool. Although, many individuals prefer hatchets because they are smaller, but perform the same tasks as axes. Bringing along a hatchet will make “heavier” tasks easier. For example, a hatchet can chop wood, split logs, and butcher large game. They are also used to dig and hammer posts into the ground.

Sometimes people will bring machetes or saws with them. However, these tools aren’t necessary for survival. They perform the same tasks a knife or a hatchet do. Machetes and saws will just cut through wood faster and easier.

Give bushcraft a try

If you are truly a bushcrafting master, you can learn how to make your own knife out of stone or flint. Learning to make a knife can be a great skill to have if you lose or forget your knife. However, a “homemade” knife should be a last resort, typically used in emergency situations only.

Bushcrafting Improves Camping

Mastering bushcrafting doesn’t mean you have to completely live off the land every time you go into the wild. You can still camp in a tent, roast marshmallows, and sing campfire songs. However, bushcrafting can enhance your camping experience.

For starters, it allows you to enjoy camping without sleeping in an camper van or lugging an enormous tent and lots of gear with you. Camping the old-fashioned way will allow you to disconnect from technology and social media, allowing you to connect with yourself and the people around you.

Bushcrafting can significantly improve hiking or backpacking trips too

Knowing how to live off the land can decrease the amount of equipment you might need to bring along. For example, you might not need to bring as much food or cooking equipment, lightening your load and improving your overall experience.

Finally, bushcraft skills are great to have in emergency situations. Bringing store-bought food might make cooking easier, but if an animal gets into your food you could find yourself in trouble. Or if someone injures themselves, knowing first-aid skills could prevent infection or further injuries.

Splashing About With The Dog In The Amanda Wellies by BOGS

Amanda Wellies by BOGS

What Are They?

Amanda Slip On Wellington Boot by BOGS
Available in Emerald or Black
Priced £70 Find Out more

Features

  • 100% Waterproof
  • Made from rubber
  • Midsole rebound cushioning for extra comfort
  • Featuring Bogs Max-Wick lining to keep your feet dry
  • DuraFresh bio-technology helps combat stinky odors

Amanda Wellies by BOGS

The Verdict

It’s no fun squelching around in wet socks & boots.

And for those of us that aren’t just fair weather walkers – we’ve all been there. Finding comfy and 100% waterproof wellies is vital then to make those wet walks more enjoyable, keep your socks dry & keep your feet happy.

I tested the cute looking Amanda Slip On Wellington Boot in a variety of wet and damp walks with my dog Norman to see if they delivered the goods.

I opted for size 6.5 as I’m normally between a 6-7 in boots and I found the fit to be good with extra room to comfortably fit thick walking socks on. True to size and width I’d recommend you go for your usual size.

The overall fit and feel of the boots is what I’d describe as roomy over the top of the foot, but nice and snug where it matters on the heel area making walking in them pleasant.

BOG Boot Wellies

Style

If you’re like me and find the usual tall wellington boot style to sometimes be overkill and you prefer a shorter design, these lovely boots by BOGS should go on your shopping list.

Available in Black and Emerald green, I found the short slip on boots to be easy to get on and off.

What about the grip? The sole of the boot is made from a sturdy rubber which I found to give good grip on wet surfaces.

Amanda Wellies by BOGS

Comfort

The midsole features what BOG call ‘rebound cushioning’ which means basically if you usually have to put extra inner soles/orthopaedic supports in wellies to make them comfortable to go on longer walks in, you’ll probably find like me you won’t need to with these.

Amanda Wellies by BOGS

Final Thoughts

Stylish, funky looking and comfy the Amanda Slip On Boot happily kept my feet bone dry whilst walking in rain soaked fields, mud and splashing through streams. Result.

Because of the comfort these boots give, you’ll find you no longer need the excuse of rain to throw your wellies on and go for a ramble.

Watch A Movie Under The Stars With The Incredible BenQ GS1 Camping Projector

BenQ GS1 Camping Proejctor in our tent

What is it?

BenQ GS1 camping projector
£518 at Amazon.co.uk

Technical features

  • Cable-free outdoor family entertainment with built-in USB reader
  • Palm sized, 1kg light weight and 3 hour battery life
  • WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity
  • Project 60” big screen from just 1m away
  • Drop proof and IPX1 Splash Proof
  • Hassle free setup within seconds
  • Various pre-set picture modes including camping mode

Find the full technical specification of the GS1 here.

What’s in the box?

Firstly, can we just take a moment to appreciate the obvious care and attention that’s clearly gone into designing the packaging of the GS1? The box has a wood grain print and comes with a rustic looking handle, which fits nicely with the intended outdoor use of the product.

BenQ GS1 Camping Projector Unboxing

Inside the box there’s a padded carry case. We see so many products that have been designed for camping that totally overlook the need to transport things easily, so it’s nice to see that despite the GS1 being such a high-tech product, BenQ haven’t overlooked the basics. Inside the padded carry case there’s the projector unit itself, the battery pack, a soft orange cover, instruction manual, charging cable, remote control and a set of batteries.

BenQ GS1 Camping ProejctorProjected onto the front of our tent

What did we think?

Getting the unit charged and set up on WiFi was our first task, and as usual, I never bother to read instruction manuals and just dive straight in. I always think the mark of good product design, particularly when it comes to tech, is that a product and it’s software interface should be intuitive to use, and the BenQ GS1 didn’t disappoint.

Setting up the BenQ GS1 Camping Proejctor in our tentWe loved that there were a number of pre-set modes especially optimised for camping

Getting WiFi set up did initially take a little bit of random button pressing before I had it figured out, but when you start up the GS1 it immediately takes you through a set-up wizard. Initially it took quite a while to connect to our WiFi (but we do live in the 3 story house with the router on the ground floor) but once set up, we plugged in our Firestick and immediately went on to YouTube to play a few music videos through it. The new Foo Fighters song Run was a good first test for it. The audio was surprisingly good, and projected onto the white wall in our bedroom, the picture was crisp.

BenQ GS1 Camping Proejctor in our tentCloseup showing the various ports at the rear of the projector, providing plenty of connection options

After using it at home, we then took it on a big camping trip with us to really put it through it’s paces as we were interested to see how it would fare when used outdoors. Despite the unit not having a particularly high Lumen count, we didn’t have an issue with the brightness of the projector. It’s true to say that when used in direct/bright light, it wasn’t brilliant, but then I’ve never used a projector (including big boardroom projectors at a much higher price point) that can perform well in full daylight. The projector was clearly visible in the evening light, and was absolutely brilliant once the sun had gone down.

BenQ GS1 portable projector outside our tent

We projected outside the front of our tent as the sun was setting, and then again inside the tent when it was fully dark and the screen was perfectly visible under both conditions, but as you’d expect, it was that bit better when it was full dark later on in the evening.

BenQ GS1 Camping ProejctorProjecting onto the front of our tent, early evening

Audio wise, the sound was plenty loud enough for us to hear even though we were camped on the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea, so it had the noise of waves and other campers to contend with! Turning it up just past half way, the GS1 was loud enough for us to hear outdoors, and later, inside the tent whilst other campers were asleep, we watched another movie and had the volume turned almost all the way down, which in the quiet of the night, was plenty loud enough for us both to hear.

BenQ GS1 Camping Proejctor in our tentThe projector stored inside our tent, shown with the carry case

Final verdict?

OK so this is a pretty niche product, and it IS pricey, so it’s not going to be the first thing on most campers essentials list. That said, whilst we usually camp mostly tech-free, there are the odd afternoons or evenings when we’re camping when it’s just the two of us and we just want to snuggle up and chill. Normally we’d listen to music or read, but having the option to watch a film felt wonderfully decadent, and I remarked that it was like camping in the future.

For glamping site owners, giving guests the option to watch a movie under the stars could be a great additional option, whilst for families camping in bad weather, it provides the option of watching a family movie together. We camped for 5 days with the GS1, and whilst we had glorious sunshine for 4 of those days, on the 5th evening it rained, reminding us how useful the projector is for entertaining campers inside the tent in bad weather.

We absolutely love the BenQ GS1 and will be making good use of it not only on future camping trips, but also at home.

BenQ GS1 Camping Proejctor in our tentGetting the projector ready to watch a film on our recent camping trip

Pros and Cons

ProsCons
  • We loved that there were a number of pre-set modes especially optimised for camping
  • We really liked how the projector looks and the slightly ruggedised orange case
  • The compact carry case is well thought out and nicely padded making it perfect for traveling/camping
  • The interface is intuitive and easy to use, we didn’t use the instruction manual
  • We loved that once set up on WiFi we could plug our Firestick straight in to watch movies
  • Surprisingly good sound quality
  • A great selection of various input ports at the rear of the projector
  • Good build quality; everything about it felt solid and capable
  • Great picture quality, so much so we’ve used it at home several times and will take away on most camping trips from now on
  • Different screen settings allow for the different colours of your chosen projection surface, the picture looked great on our sandstone bell tent
  • The 3 hour battery life is enough for one film or two very short films (if you’re lucky)
  • It’s an expensive bit of kit
  • The bulb isn’t massively bright, so we’d recommend using it inside the tent, at dusk or at night for best results
