What do we think?

I’ve been using this table for camping trips all year, and I still absolutely love it. So let’s tell you a little bit more about why I never camp without taking along the Robens Trekker L table.

When it comes to aesthetics, camping gear is still playing catch up, but the increasing use of more natural materials like Bamboo has made a big difference. Function of course is the most important component of any piece of camping gear, but for me, form is almost as important! Some of the camp tables you can buy, for example made of white plastic are just awful looking things.

Slatted stainless steel camp tables are less offensive to look at but in my experience, they aren’t massively sturdy. In terms of strength, stability and looks though, you simply can’t beat Bamboo camp furniture. As well as having antibacterial properties, bamboo furniture is very hard-wearing, one of the reasons why I wanted to spend a whole season camping with the Trekker L before posting my review.

Robens Trekker L Bamboo Camp TableThe Trekker L up inside my Robens Trapper tent

Despite most of my camping trips this year unexpectedly turning into solo trips, I am certain you could easily seat four people around the Trekker L table, however for larger families, the Trekker XL table might be a better option. When I camp I tend to use a camp table as much for convenient standing height storage (I hate having to continually pick up things out of bags or boxes on the floor when camping), as I do for eating from, and the Trekker L has performs consistently well in every respect.

It’s worth mentioning that a couple of the aluminum poles that form the base of the table were initially very difficult to push into their relevant holes on the first couple of uses, but a quick spray of WD40 helped and I’ve had no assembly issues since.

The Verdict

As well as being small and light to carry, it’s so fast to put up, and goes from looking like bizarre and confusing tangled mess of poles to a sturdy, attractive table in about a minute. Now, Bamboo furniture is not cheap, and the Robens Trekker L is no exception, it’s a premium camp table, but you are paying for quality here.

If you’re after a sturdy and attractive table that will see you through many years of family camping, then you really can’t go wrong with the Robens Trekker L which makes a sound investment that won’t disappoint.

Pros

  • It folds up to a really small size, making it great when space is at a premium
  • It looks stunning with it’s natural bamboo top
  • It’s quick and intuitive to put together
  • It’s very strong and sturdy
  • Can accommodate 4, though the large Trekker XL is also available for larger families

Cons

  • It’s pricier than standard folding camp tables

GEAR | Funky And Practical – Official VW Licensed Camping Chairs

VW Camp Chair Review

What We Tested

VW Camp Chair Review

I have a bit of an aversion to the standard shades of black, navy and bottle green that a lot of camping chairs and equipment tends to come in, so I was excited to get my hands on two bright and funky looking VW camp chairs, inspired by the iconic 1960s VW T2 campervan. Although not lucky enough to own a classic T2, we do have the next best thing, a modern long wheel base T5 VW making these officially licenced chairs the perfect camping accessory.

VW Camp Chair Review

What We Thought

VW Padded Folding Chair

On test first is the padded folding chair. We liked this because although it is structurally similar to many other chairs of this type on the market, it certainly has the edge. The extra padding gives it a sense of luxury not always offered with this style of folding chair and best of all has to be the cool colours that this comes in. You can choose from purple, Light blue, retro red or mint green. Our green model really stood out and sat wonderfully next to our van. It also turned a few heads.

VW Camp Chair Review

Of course, its not ALL about good looks. sitting in the chair, it feels roomy, stable and comfortable with an extra high back offering superior support. There is also an ever-so-welcome drinks holder provided in one of the arms for that obligatory cool summer beverage.

Strength and stability are provided by the chairs’ 18mm tubular steel frame which is powder-coated for enhanced rust-resistance.

VW Camp Chair ReviewClose up chair details

VW Camp Chair ReviewThe cup holder in the padded folding chair

Folded up in seconds, the chair comes with a durable 420D nylon bag to conveniently store it away. The bag features a drawstring to securely close it and a strap to comfortably carry over your shoulder. Lightweight and compact, it can be easily carried with the rest of your camping gear and takes up very little space in your tent, garage, or vehicle.

At £29.99 the padded chair is the pricest in the range, but it is also the most luxurious so definitely worth it.

VW Low Folding Beach Chair

On to the second chair we tested, the VW low folding beach chair. Being a perennial floor dweller, I was keen to try this one out. I like to be close to the ground and this chair certainly allows for this with the seat being approximately 6 inches from the ground. It really encourages you to put your head back, close your eyes and soak up the summer rays. This is definitely a chair for when the sun is shining, the tunes are playing and you have a cold drink in your hand!

VW Camp Chair ReviewThe VW low folding beach chair

OK, let’s be realistic, its probably not going to suit your gran or anyone with mobility issues, but there are 3 other styles of chair to choose from in the range for those unable to comfortably use such a low chair.

Like the padded chair, the low chair also comes in four awesome colours and has a tubular steel frame. The seat is 600D with PVC coating to protect it from the elements.. The frame has a silver-coloured powder coating for enhanced rust-resistance and It can also be folded up in seconds and packed into the durable 210D nylon bag. The bag features a drawstring to securely fasten it and a strap to carry over your shoulder.

Priced at £22.99 the low folding beach chair is suitable for most peoples pocket and is super lightweight and portable. Perfect if you are very limited on space or simply have a lot to carry. Being so low also means you get to be closer to any food strewn around your picnic blanket, and that can’t be a bad thing!

Coleman Cortes Tent ReviewThe sturdy frame of the Coleman Cortes Ocatagon 8 tent

What did we think?

The best way to describe the unusual Coleman Cortes Octagon Tent is that it’s basically a large 8-person tent crossed with a gazebo. We decided it would be perfect to use for a wedding we were attending down in beautiful Devon. We hit the road after work and got to the site by nightfall. Armed with only a small lantern and our camping beers, 4 of us set to work raising the tent.

The Coleman Cortes is a pretty bulky and heavy tent. At 21kg it’s lighter than a similarly sized canvas bell tent, but although it’s often advertised as a festival tent, it’s too heavy in my option for festival use unless you have an enormous, heavy-duty trolley to transport the tent on.

It took two of us to lift it into the car where it took up the whole boot of our VW Polo. We really struggled for space in the car with 4 people on board and the boot monopolised by the enormous tent, so that’s definitely worth bearing in mind if you only have a small car! The Cortes tent bag does include wheels however, which we found were really helpful moving it around on concrete, but not so great on grass or soft ground.

Upon emptying the bag, all the poles were colour coded – though we still got confused as the poles were a slightly different shade to the colours presented in the instructions but the beauty of the Cortes poles is that they are well designed and wonderfully flexibl, which gave us the ability to get the structure up with relative ease once we ditched the instruction and figured it out for ourselves.

Coleman Cortes Tent ReviewOne of the doors which provide multiple options to use as a window, with bug mesh layer

It took 4 of us around 40 minutes to put up the tent for the first time but with experience, I’m sure this could be cut down to the 15 minutes quoted by Coleman. We also found that we had extra bits left over that the instructions didn’t cover which puzzled us. But none the less, we discovered that the tent was incredibly sturdy- possibly the sturdiest tent we’ve ever used and thanks to wonderful weather, we had no need to use the guy ropes.

The space inside is incredible. This truly is a family-sized tent and there was also more than enough headroom which gave us plenty of space to get ready for my friend’s big day. In fact, many other wedding guests used the tent to get ready in themselves!

The shape of the tent means there is a lot of usable space – unlike bell tents with sloping sides, so this means that every corner can be used for storage. We managed to store half the wedding party’s suits and dresses on the hanging hooks inside, along with ourselves and the rest of our gear.

Coleman Cortes Tent ReviewHandy storage pockets inside the tent

The Coleman Cortes was great in the summer heat. Along with 2 large entrance doors, the tent can be opened up completely turning it into something more akin to a gazebo. Say goodbye to boiling to death on hot sunny days, you can simply remove the fly sheet and open the windows and doors for maxium airflow. Having two doors makes the tent very flexible – a real help when popping to the loo at night as we didn’t need to climb over each other to exit the tent. For family or group use, the tent comes with a room divider which is easily clipped in to provide a 2 bedroom configuration.

Coleman Cortes Tent ReviewThe Coleman Cortes Ocatagon 8 minus it’s fly sheet

We had no issues with dripping condensation overnight due to the high performance polyester and found the hinged door to be an excellent feature as we were popping in and out in our swanky wedding attire throughout the whole day. Taking the flysheet off the Coleman Cortes gave us a great opportunity to feel that bit closer to the lovely rural environment we were in, whilst still being away from insects and the weather. It was also a great space to eat in and allowed us to air out the tent in the day time without leaving the door wide open.

Packing down the tent was easy, but getting it back into its carry case took 4 people, and sadly, the tent bag split open at the zip. We were incredibly disappointed that the bag had broken on its first use and feel a far more generous case size would help matters.

Coleman Cortes Tent ReviewBig D shape doorway

The verdict

The tent is big, airy and provides heaps of room for a family or friends and we love that it can be used either as a tent, or more as a gazebo. The downside however, is that it’s big and bulky to transport, so not a good choice for festivals or for those with small cars.

They quality of everything but the bag is very good, and the poles are particularly sturdy. Although we only spent a weekend in the Coleman Cortes, we felt that the tent has a lot to offer and we’re looking forward to using it on a more conventional camping trip next time. Despite the tent being marketed at festival goers, we do feel that it is more suited to a family camping holiday, or as a hub for a larger camping group.

Coleman Cortes Tent ReviewInside the tent with all doors zipped up

Pros

  • Excellent weatherproof material
  • Tons of space inside the tent, including great head space
  • Handy pockets which are ideal for storing torches and gadgets
  • Brilliant airflow with wide windows and several doors, so a good tent for use when it’s hot
  • The poles were of great quality and made the Coleman Cortes sturdy
  • Flexible configuration options allowing it to be used as a tent or more of a gazebo

Cons

  • We found the bag was very heavy and bulky and the zip and material broke on first use
  • Took up the entire car boot
  • The wheels were great but unhelpful on grass and it’s much too heavy to carry with you for a festival
  • We found the Instructions misleading and it took longer than 15 minutes to set up on first use

CAMPING | A Weekend With The Vango AirHub Hexaway Low Campervan Awning – Review

I’ve not camped as much as I like to this year, and whilst I love spending time under canvas, being outdoors and alfresco dining, we’ve spent more time recently in our VW Transporter, but with limited space, I was keen to add an awning to our set up. I was delighted to get my hands on the Vango AirHub Hexaway Low which looked like it would be fast to set up and give us the extra space we needed. Read on to find out what I thought of it.

Vango Airhub Hexaway LowCarrying the AirHub Hexaway Low out of the van

So what exactly is the AirHub Hexaway Low? In plain English, it is a drive away campervan awning that does not require tent poles and instead uses the Vango inflatable air beam system.

We headed off to the south coast for a Windsurfing competition my boyfriend was entering, giving us the perfect opportunity to try the Hexaway out. The windsurfing competition was cancelled due to zero wind so we took off in his VW long wheel base campervan to find somewhere else to set up camp for the weekend.

We arrived in a beautiful spot on the edge of a wood and took the Hexaway out of the van which comes packaged in one very neat bag which I managed to carry over one shoulder without too much effort.

Vango Airhub Hexaway LowGetting ready to set up

The practicalities

When you empty the bag, you are met with the awning itself and two smaller bags, one containing pegs etc and the other containing a manual air pump. Even an inexperienced camper like me knows there is usually another bag to unpack containing metal tent poles and it almost felt like we were missing something! That certainly isn’t a complaint, the less faff as far as I’m concerned, the better!

Given we’d arrived at our pitch fairly late in the day and that my other half is an engineer by trade, we decided to skip the non-intuitive instructions and get hands on as soon as possible. We found our perfect spot and began building our home for the night.

Vango Airhub Hexaway LowThis was my first time setting up an AirBeam and I found it quick and easy

I was struck by how light and manegable the whole structure was and how uncomplicated. Once we had laid it all out on our carefully chosen spot, we located the inflation point so we could attach the pump and begin inflating. There are three air valve inflation points to choose from. Vango includes 3 rather than just one because it makes the structure easier and quicker to deflate.

I was sure we would be pumping well into the evening but to my surprise, once it starts taking shape, the whole thing goes up quickly and seamlessly. We did make one school boy error and that was to pump air into the structure before we had attached it to the van. This gave us a bit of adjusting to do to get it nicely secured to the van but it was no real set back. We attached it to the van via Velcro straps which connect straight to the roof rails, and then secured it down using the over vehicle webbing straps which go over the vehicle and get pegged into the ground on the other side. This feature also allows the awning to be attatched to vehicles without roof rails.

Vango Airhub Hexaway LowPegging out the AirHub Hexaway Low

One of the first things you notice once the dome shaped structure is fully inflated is how light and spacious the whole thing feels. This is in part due to the generous height of the Hexaway but also the nice use of Alternating Diamond Clear and mesh windows windows plus the nifty sky lights vango have incorporated into it.

Once the structure is inflated and in place it is secured by use of guide ropes and pegs in the same way you would with a traditional awning or tent.

The ground sheet is hexagonal in shape and is a clip in one rather than sewn in. Something to bear in mind if you are going to actually use it to sleep in as well as chill in like we did.

Vango Airhub Hexaway Low ReviewUnclipped and ready for us to drive away for the day

Driveaway awning

After everything was up and secured with guide ropes, we made a bed, put on some music and lay back to admire our handy work. The sky lights which run along the roof line offering extra light during the day and star gazing opportunities at night meant we had a fabulous view of the canopy above us and I felt instantly calmed.

It was then that my mind turned to food and drink and I realised that if we were going to enjoy the bottle of small batch gin I’d bought with us, we were going to need some ice, and while we were at it, some strawberries oh, and maybe some chocolate.

Vango Airhub Hexaway LowAttaching the awning to the campervan

I convinced mark that we needed these things since it would give us a great opportunity to test how easily we would we able to detach the awning from the van. It is described as a drive away awning after all. It took us just five minutes including Marks idea of leaving markers where the tyres of the van sat in order to make the job of reattaching easier on our return.

I highly recommend doing this as it allowed us to join back up to the Hub on in no time.

More than enough room to swing a cat

We cracked open the gin and it was then Mark asked tentatively if I’d mind if one of his windsurfing boards spent the night with us too. I must have agreed too quickly because by the time I came back from the toilet block, there was not one, but TWO in there.

Vango Airhub Hexaway LowPlenty of room inside

Here’s the thing though, even with two windsurfing boards, a makeshift double bed, a camping chair, two big overnight bags and three cool bags full of supplies, the space still felt generous, light and airy.

Easy access

Contributing to the feeling of airiness when you’re inside, are the many windows and exit points incorporated into the hub. There are three exit points by way of full zip doors and two further exit points on either side of the panel that connects the hub to your van. These extra smaller doors mean you are able to access your van without going through the main awning area if you want to.

Vango Airhub Hexaway LowThe Vango AirBeam system

There are 5 main Windows, three of which open to reveal large mesh panels offering plenty of ventilation. Given it was 28 degrees in the shade, we were extremely grateful for this. Each window also has a large zipped curtain easily zipped up or down, and rolled up and secured with toggle points when not in use.

Talk of the town

Being situated close to a walkway, it struck me how may times I overheard people commenting on the Hexaway Hub and we even had two random strangers approach us to ask us about it. One in the late afternoon when we had finished erecting it and then another in the morning asking how we’d found it overnight. I really wasn’t aware that ‘tent envy’ was a thing. It clearly is!

Vango Airhub Hexaway LowThe rear of the awning

Hexaway is the way!

The Vango AirHub Hexaway Low is the perfect half way house between the compromise of sleeping in a cramped van, and the hassle of erecting a full on tent with poles, or event a large traditional pole awning. Although the hub is mainly promoted as a “spacious gazebo for relaxing and unwinding, or a useful storage area for furniture and toys whilst you go off exploring”, I personally would rather sleep in that spacious airy hub over cuddling up to various bits of windsurfing kit in the back of my boyfriends van, and yes, the clip in clip out ground sheet might make that more problematic when the weather starts to turn but the point is, the Hexaway offers you choice.

The AirHub Hexaway is one camping luxury I can’t see myself giving up anytime soon.

As somewhere to relax and entertain in during the day while at a windsurfing competition or picnic with friends, the hub is absolutely perfect, and although there is more involved to get this up and running than with a simple canopy-style awning, the bit of extra time spent pegging out the structure is definitely worth it and gives it a sense of permanence and luxury.

The AirHub Hexaway is one camping luxury I can’t see myself giving up anytime soon, and will be using each and every time we now take off in the campervan.

Vango Airhub Hexaway Low ReviewInside the AirHub Hexaway Low awning

Pros

  • Compact and takes us minimal space in your campervan
  • Quick to put up thanks to the AirBeam system
  • It feels spacious, light and airy inside with good head space
  • Multiple windows and exit / entrance points
  • Stylish and slightly unusualy looking which lead to it getting lots of attention at the campsite

Cons

  • It’s not cheap, although it does come with a two-year warranty and an extra year added free if you register your product
  • We found the Instructions a little confusing
  • Guy ropes are not as bright as on other tents I’ve had in the past and so easy to trip over at dusk

Emperor star bell tent from Boutique Camping reviewHigh ceilings make this spacious tent feel very light and airy

Before we start talking about pitching the tent, we need to mention the size and weight of it! At 48kg it’s a pretty hefty beast, and that makes for a substantial pack size of 95cm x 35cm. I needed help packing it into my car and lifting it out again, and although it is heavy and is likely to require two to lift, it does have a whole heap of benefits (namely so much space!) so bear with me on this and don’t let the weight put you off.

Pitching the tent

Rather than just a centre pole and an A frame for the door like a regular bell tent, with the Emperor there are a total of 5 poles. 3 poles form the main shape of the tent which includes 2 verticals plus a horizontal pole that runs across the top to connect the two uprights. Then there’s the A frame to create the massive doorway as well as a flexible pole that forms the front canopy. As a result, this is not a tent that one person can put up on their own and our first attempt took around 40 minutes from start to finish.

Just like all Boutique Camping tents, the Star Emperor Bell comes with high quality, heavy duty tent pegs and it was nice to see a branded mallet included in the bag too. After unrolling the tent and laying out the poles ready to assemble, I started by pegging out the groundsheet, just as you would with a regular bell tent.

Next, and with some help, we attempted to raise the tent using the centre poles, and after a couple of failed attempts, got the knack of positioning the horizontal pole that attaches to the very top of the two vertical poles.

Emperor star bell tent from Boutique Camping reviewThe tent features heavy duty pegs and thick webbing rather than guy ropes

Then it was a matter of popping in the A frame to make the doorway, then outside to pull out and peg down the star canopy, before finally erecting the canopy section at the front using the thin, flexible pole and pegging out the front guy ropes. Although our first attempt took a good 40 minutes, we’ve since managed to get it set up in just under half an hour.

Internal space

As you can see from the photos, the natural sand colour of the canvas takes on a bit of an orangey hue in bright sunshine, but the two photographs below will give you an idea of the space inside the tent, which is immense!

Emperor star bell tent from Boutique Camping review
We had the tent set up with our very large camp kitchen unit as well as our large double camp bed, along with a bedside table, and there was still masses of space. If I had to take a guess as to how many people you could sleep inside one of these, then assuming simple single air beds or SIMs, you could easily sleep 6-8.

Emperor star bell tent from Boutique Camping review

Just like a normal bell tent, the Star Emperor tent features half moon air vents that are mesh covered, the tent also features a heavy duty groundsheet that can be zipped off, allowing you to roll up the sides of the tent in very hot weather. With the huge front door, roof vents and the half moon vents unzipped, there was plenty of airflow, helping to keep the tent relatively cool even in blazing sunshine.

Emperor star bell tent from Boutique Camping reviewThe front canopy all pegged down.

One thing to mention about this tent is the enormous doorway, which means no bending to walk in and out and it also makes is very easy to get all of your camp furniture into the tent. The large doorway would also be ideal for wheelchair users, making it easy to gain access to the tent.

Emperor star bell tent from Boutique Camping reviewNo bending needed to walk in or out of this tent

Pros

  • Beautiful looking tent
  • Addition of the star canopy provides shade and extra cover from the rain
  • The tent is very light and airy with excellent air flow
  • Excellent construction and quality
  • There is loads of space inside the tent
  • I’d like to live in it all the time

Cons

  • At a whopping 48kg, it’s heavy to lift
  • It takes longer to erect than a bell tent and it takes 2 people to do it

Emperor star bell tent from Boutique Camping reviewA sunset shot showing the star canopy in all its glory when viewed from the side

Final thoughts

This is an absolutely stunning tent and I adore it. That said, if you are thinking about buying the Star Canopy Emperor Bell, you will need to consider the fact that it’s bigger and heavier than a standard bell tent – I can manage to carry and set up a normal 5m bell tent on my own, but this is too heavy for me to be able to manage on my own.

If it’s a true glamping feel you want from your tent, this is the one to go for.

It’s also worth taking into consideration the fact that pitching the tent takes longer than a regular bell tent as there are more poles to contend with, so it’s a 2 person job to get the three main internal poles in place. That said, for family campers and for those who want something a bit different, this tent is incredible.

Emperor star bell tent from Boutique Camping reviewThis photograph shows the true colour of the bell tent, and shows you how high the sides are too

In terms of stylish good looks and the sheer amount of space it offers, the Star Emperor Bell get’s top marks from us, so if it’s a true glamping feel you want from your tent, this is the one to go for.
