What did we think?

I have a confession to make. I have an obsession with Bluetooth speakers. I have them all over the house, and I have a couple of tiny ones that I take camping…when it comes to being able to draw a comparison, I’ve got plenty to compare the Braven 405 against, and on the basis of looks alone, it blows all of my other Bluetooth speakers away.

I’ve taken it camping, used it at home in the garden and last weekend we took it away with us again. It was Glastonbury weekend, and as usual we settled in front of ‘GlastonTelly’ to enjoy the likes of Royal Blood, Foo Fighters, Radiohead and Elbow. The accommodation we stayed in had a TV, but as usual with most flat screen telly’s, the sound wasn’t great. Using an aux in cable however, we hooked the Braven 405 up to the TV and it provided us with brilliant, headliner-worthy sound.

Pros and Cons

ProsCons
  • Highly tactile and sleek rubberised body
  • Awesome array of bright funky colours to choose from
  • Integrated stand is a nice touch
  • We found it charged really quickly in just over 2 hours on mains power
  • Amazing battery life
  • Very simple to use
  • At high volume the sound was little bit tinny, but only noticeable on certain songs

Final verdict

If you’re after a small portable Bluetooth speaker, the Braven 405 makes a great choice. With a vast array of colours to choose from, amazing battery life, fast charging time and great sound quality, it’s a big thumbs up from us!

A Chilled Out Weekend of Luxury Glamping at Coniston Park Coppice in Cumbria

Explore Freedom Glamping Pods Coniston

Explore Freedom Glamping Pods Coniston Coppice Park

What did we think?

Coniston Park Coppice is a Caravan and Motorhome Club site located in the Southern Lake District, set in 63 acres of stunning National Trust woodland very close to beautiful Coniston Water. There are 3 fabulous new Experience Freedom S Pods on the site, and it’s one of these that we stayed in.

Just a two hour drive from home, we set off on Friday afternoon and after a rather lengthy detour due to a motorway closure, arrived a little later than anticipated but made it on site just before 8pm. We were welcomed at reception and received a map and directions which helped us to find our pod.

Explore Freedom Glamping Pods Coniston Coppice Park

There’s generous parking available right beside each pod and they each have their own private raised deck area, along with outdoor seating and an enormous gas barbecue.

Inside the pod we were happy to find an attractive and airy interior which comprised a living room with generous double pull down sofa (cleverly hidden away – fully made up behind a mirror), a little kitchen area and a full bathroom complete with oversized monsoon rain shower. The interior decor was understated but modern, with hints of Orla Kiely in the colour palette and pattern of the curtains.

Explore Freedom Glamping Pods Coniston Coppice Park

Inside Glamping Pods Coniston Coppice Park

Once we started to explore the pod we found loads of clever storage, most of which was hidden away but gave us ample space to stow our bags, walking gear and so on. In the bathroom we found a big cupboard and this alone was plenty big enough for us to tidy away all of our stuff into.

The compact Kitchen included a microwave, kettle, toaster and fridge along with plenty of crockery and cutlery enough for four. A little welcome basket on the shelf was filled with self-catering essentials and some very tasty biscuit treats too. The kitchen also included pots and pans, which at first proved perplexing given no hob, but after whipping the cover off the 3-burner gas barbecue, we found a single ring gas burner attached and the pans suddenly made more sense!

Inside Glamping Pods Kitchen Coniston Coppice Park

We had fabulous weather so cooked on the barbecue twice, using it to grill bacon in the morning and for chicken burgers in the evening. With such lovely weather we made the most of the outdoor seating, eating breakfast and dinner outside. Obviously cooking on the barbecue does rely on dry weather, so bear this in mind if you are planning on self-catering.

Barbecue Outside The Pod at Coniston Coppice Park

The site itself is really peaceful and set in stunning woodland, which made for a truly relaxing weekend. The walk into Consiton is just far enough for you to feel like you’ve earned a coffee and a slice of cake; we ate on the waterfront at The Bluebird Cafe, which on a Saturday afternoon was lively but the food was good and we had fantastic views over Coniston Water.

Double bed in the glamping pod

Inside Glamping Pods Kitchen Coniston Coppice Park

The verdict?

We’ve stayed in a similar luxury pod before, but the layout of this pod is a bit different as it will accommodate a family of 4.  After a busy few weeks, relaxing in style and without the need to set up camp ourselves, was just what we needed. We thought that the interior space of the pod was very well thought out, the double bed was spacious and very comfy and we enjoyed a very relaxing break.

With the Old Man of Coniston visible close by the location is ideal for walkers. Whilst we didn’t do any notable walks, we clocked up a good few miles walking into and around Coniston, and the surrounding countryside is absolutely beautiful. The added bonus for us was the proximity to Coniston Water. Lugging a kayak meant the walk through the site and on through an adjacent campsite took us around 15 minutes. Though there is a closer drop off point, you can’t park there, so you’d end up returning your vehicle and walking down anyway.

Coniston water itself is lovely and we were there on a sunny Sunday afternoon. There were plenty of people on and in the water, but it didn’t feel too busy and definitely not crowded. After a paddle in my new inflatable kayak I jumped in and went for a swim – actually the first time I’ve wild swum in the UK. The water temperature in June wasn’t freezing, but I was glad I had my wetsuit on! Being so close to the lake (and not having to pay to launch my kayak) was a huge bonus and getting out onto the water really helped make the weekend for us.

Highlights

  • Stunning pods with everything you could possibly need – true luxury that even people who hate camping and glamping will love!
  • The pods are spacious, cleverly laid out with lots of storage and suitable for a family of 4.
  • Fantastic location very close to Coniston Water so perfect for those who want to spend time in/on the water, especially if you don’t want to have to pay to launch!
  • Lots of helpful information about the pods, site and local area all provided.
  • Very well equipped – we loved the big gas barbecue, TV and Bluetooth speaker system and comfy beds.
  • We enjoyed the walk into Coniston and the site has close proximity to great walking trails including the Old Man of Coniston
  • The Coniston Coppice Park site is pretty and quiet.
  • The staff and other guests were extremely friendly, in fact we struck up several conversations and even let some curious caravanners in for a look around the pod.

alomon Quest 4D Women’s Walking Boot

What did I think?

I put the Salomon Quest 4D’s through their paces on a variety of different walks with my pooch Norman in tow.

Usually I’m anything between a size 6 to a 6.5 in walking shoes, and I found the 6.5 fitted me perfectly.

As it’s the summer I wasn’t wearing my usual thick Merino hiking socks, just normal cotton-wicking walking socks, but when trying the Quests on with my thick hiking socks at home I was pleased to find that the fit was still good.

Whilst on our first hike out in the boots the conditions were extremely wet and soggy I was pleased that the Quest 4D’s weren’t only comfy, but they were kept me sure-footed and didn’t let any moisture in.

In the past I’ve found walking boots with quite a high ankle to be rather uncomfortable around the lower leg area before they’ve been worn in. Within half an hour of giving the Salomons their maiden outing though, I’d forgotten I was wearing them.

Huge thumbs up from me!

alomon Quest 4D Women’s Walking Boot

Comfort

The molded Eva midsole feature really does give plenty of cushioning and stability just as Salomon claims it does. Couple this with how quickly the boots felt comfortable during my first 2.5 hour walk in them, I’d happily grab these to wear for hiking, rambling and dog walking alike.

Grip

My dog Norman and I tend to favour going off-road meaning long walks in some challenging conditions, so I was eager to see how the grip performed on the boots.

We headed off for a ramble over the Clent Hills in the West Midlands and made a beeline for some tricky terrain. I was duly impressed with not just the grip the Quests provided, but once again the waterproofing proved a winner as we sploshed our way through streams.

alomon Quest 4D Women’s Walking Boot

Final Thoughts

Since getting the Saloman Quests, they have been my walking shoe of choice on my longer rambles out with the dog.

Sturdy yet failry lightweight, comfortable and waterproof. All of the features any self-respecting walking shoe should offer, you’ll find in the Saloman Quest 4D’s. If you’re after a new pair of walking boots, your hard earned cash will be well spent here.

We Field Test The Coleman Rocky Mountain 5 Family Tent

Coleman Rocky Mountain 5 Family Tent

 What is it?

Coleman Rocky Mountain 5 Family Tent

Features

  • BlackOut Bedrooms™ block out 99% of sunlight and regulates temperature
  • Two extra large bedrooms
  • 4,500mm hydrostatic head
  • Integrated PE groundsheet
  • Reflective guylines
  • Ventilation panels
  • Flysheet is fire retardant and features UVGuard, providing SPF 50 protection
  • Ample pockets and handing hooks
  • Editors Choice winner, 2016 Camping awards

We’ve written previously about the Coleman Rocky Mountain 5 tent after seeing it at the Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show earlier this year, so when Coleman got in touch with us, we were keen to field test one for ourselves.

Coleman Rocky Mountain Tunnel Tent Green and Grey 5

What did we think?

On arrival at the campsite the tent took the 2 of us about 15 minutes to put up. It’s a traditional tunnel design tent with a front living area, and a rear bedroom that can be separated using a clip in divider. To put the tent up there are 3 poles to assemble which are colour coded and are attached in place using a simple ring and pin system. We found set up to be simple and intuitive and although the tent can be pitched as one, first time around, we needed to attach the bedroom compartment inside.

Coleman Rocky Mountain Tunnel Tent Green and Grey 5

Coleman Rocky Mountain Detailing

The tent includes a large full width front door which can be fully unzipped and rolled up, or you can choose to unzip and roll-up just the outer flysheet, keeping the bug mesh in place. There’s also a smaller but still generous door on the side, which again features the same bug mesh. Because it was so hot, we unzipped both the flysheet and and bug mesh for maximum airflow.

Kitchen area inside tentOur kitchen set up inside the tent with both doors rolled up

We camped on the hottest weekend of the year, with the temperature hitting 30 degrees.  Having the addition of the side door and a rear window in the bedroom compartment meant we could open everything and let air flow through, and boy did we need it! In fact, for most of the weekend we had the large front door rolled up as well as the side door next to the kitchen unit, which also meant we could safely cook thanks to heaps of ventilation which made the front living area feel more like an airy awning.

Coleman Rocky Mountain 5 Family Tent

There are triangular windows in the front corners of the living area which have covers that can be easily opened up to let more light in, and on the right hand side opposite the smaller door, there’s an air vent and a large clear window so you can make the most of the view from your pitch.

Inside the living area as well as a cable entry point, we found plenty of storage pockets, as well as lantern hanging points and velcro around the bedroom compartment which allowed us to tidy away the cable from the HUBi light we use.

Coleman Rocky Mountain 5 Blackout bedroomThe Rocky Mountain 5 Blackout bedroom with the rear window open

The verdict?

As the previous owner of 2 Coleman tents, we’ve always found that price wise, you tend to get slightly more for your money than say a similar spec of Vango tent. The quality of the Rocky Mountain 5 is good, and it’s not difficult to see why it’s an award winning tent.

Coleman Rocky Mountain Tunnel Tent Front Door
Coleman Rocky Mountain DetailingTop: Front view of the Rocky Mountain 5 with door fully open Bottom Left: Easily adjustable tent peg loops Bottom Right: Roll up bedroom window with mesh cover

For such a spacious tent, the pack size was fairly modest and once up, we thought it was surprisingly spacious given it’s pack size. We also really liked the fresh green colours of the tent too, especially the funky lime green used for some detailing.

We found that the blackout bedroom made a real difference; in fact at night you couldn’t see a thing inside the bedroom area without putting on a light, it was liking looking into a cave!

If you don’t have heaps of space available in the car, but need something that’s big enough for a family of 4, then the Rocky Mountain 5 would be a great choice. We always prefer to have space in a tent, and because we use camp beds and have a full kitchen set up, space wise, it’s ideal for the 2 of us; we certainly wouldn’t camp for more than a night or two in anything smaller but then we do recognise that we take a lot of stuff with us when we camp!

Coleman Rocky Mountain 5 Family Tent Review

Colemany Rocky Mountain 5 Pros and Cons

ProsCons
  • The tent was fast and intuitive to set up with colour coded poles and good instructions inside the bag if you do get stuck
  • A decent 4,500mm HH means I’d be confident camping in this tent in all seasons
  • Oversized bag which meant after packing the tent away again, everything fitted back inside with very little effort
  • We loved the tab system at the base of the tent which made pegging it down and tightening everything up very easy
  • Ample lantern hanging points, bug mesh across all windows and doors plus a cable entry system which was ideal for running our HUBi solar hub through
  • Good size living area with plenty of space for a table, two chairs, our enormous kitchen unit, cool box etc.
  • The blackout bedroom made a huge difference and it was very effective at blocking sunlight
  • The height inside the bedroom was quite limited, leading to even me at 5.6″ having to bend slightly when inside the bedroom
  • The extra large bedrooms didn’t impress. Despite removing the central bedroom divider, our Outwell Posodas double camp bed only just fitted inside the sleeping compartment, causing the rear of the tent to bulge out slightly so we felt the length of the bedroom could have done with being a bit more generous
  • Although it’s classed as a 5 person tent, as is often the case, you’ll only sleep 5 if you are using very narrow single SIMs
  • There were precisely enough pegs with no spares provided… and we bent one almost straight away, so we’d recommend investing in some sturdier pegs

Coleman Rocky Mountain 5 Family Tent Review

We think this is a great looking tent, with a good technical specification that offers a decent amount of space, though we’d have liked the bedroom compartment to be a few inches longer. We loved the clever blackout bedroom (Ideal for early rising little-ones) and we think the Coleman Rocky Mountain 5 offers very good value in the sub £300 family tent price range.
