NEWS | Introducing The Unique Dubpod Canvas Bell Tent Awning For Camper Vans

The Dubpod is a canvas bell tent driveway awning designed by Bell Tent Boutique. The hybrid design provides extra living space when connected to a camper van, but it can also be used as a standalone tent, providing the ultimate in camping flexibility! Read on to find out more.

Dubpod canvas bell tent awning

How does it work?

Made from 100% natural canvas, the awning hooks to the awning rail of the van, but the connector section can also be unzipped to create a stand alone tent like the Bell Tent Boutique Touareg tent. Just like traditional bell tents, the Dubpod is quick and easy to pitch, as it utilises just one centre pole.

The Dubpod has a spacious 5m x 4m oblong footprint, and the van connector adds a further 1/2 metre, so there is plenty of room inside for beds and any other ‘luxuries’ that you can’t normally take away with you..

It’s ideal for families who need extra space or groups of friends as it can add sleeping capacity for up to an extra 6 on top of your vans current sleeping configuration. The Dubpod is a hybrid between an awning when it is required to fit your van or it can be used as a stand alone tent.

The most noticeable difference to regular awnings is the feel inside. Because it’s 100% cotton canvas, it is quieter and better insulated than your regular ‘flappy’ polyester awning. In total the awning is 50kg but has a canvas carry bag for poles, tent and pegs so can be separated for transporting.

Features

  • Zip in detachable awning section that connects to your van.
  • 5m x 4m + awning to attach to your camper van.
  • Luxury awning created with heavy duty 540gsm waterproof PVC zipped in ground sheet.
  • 285 g per sqm 100% natural cotton canvas.
  • Secondary mosquito doors.
  • External window blinds.
  • Thick tuqouise guy ropes and extra strong rock pegs.
  • Access point for EHU.
  • Extra set of grooved pegs for apron.
  • Spring loaded 32mm diameter centre pole.

  • Canvas treated with UV colour fast, mould, rot & water repellent.
  • Branded metal guy rope sliders and zips.
  • Ground sheet material on bottom of the bag.
  • Pole hook for lighting etc.
  • Canvas and groundsheet patch for repairs
  • Comes with a full 12 months manufacturers warranty.

What did I think?

The vibrant hue of the bright pink Craghoppers Discovery Adventures Stretch Jacket might not be for all, but I adore bright colours! For Autumn and Winter walking in particular, it’s a nice way to brighten up what could otherwise be a dreary, dark day.

Craghoppers Discovery Adventures Stretch Jacket Electric Pink

I’ve been wearing this jacket for nearly 2 months now, and I’ve gone on lots of hill walks and rambles in it. From traipsing across the Lancashire Moors to Great Hill, scrambling over rocks at Hen Cloud in the Peak District, through to walking Catbells in Cumbria and Autumn camping trips, the jacket has been worn a lot, and has performed brilliantly every time.

Craghoppers Discovery Adventures Stretch Jacket Electric PinkScrambling over rocks at Hen Cloud

The fit of the jacket is perfect, I’m 5.6″ and find It’s a really good length, keeping my lower back warm even when bending over, and the bottom of the jacket sits low on the hips, covering the bum, which means when out for walks, you can have a rest on a rock or tree without getting the seat of your trousers mucky.

Craghoppers Discovery Adventures Stretch Jacket Electric Pink

Craghoppers Discovery Adventures Stretch Jacket Electric PinkMesh lining inside the jacket

This is my current jacket of choice because it’s so comfortable and easy to wear. I love the colour and the material and the technical features mean that rain just beads off and you remain snug and dry. It’s not too thick either, but there’s still room to pop a fleece on underneath if you’re usually cold when out walking.

For me, this jacket has everything that I look for; warmth without bulk, great technical features, a nice cut and a lovely colour. A coat that’s ideal for Autumn walking and rainy days, and I thoroughly recommend it!

Craghoppers Discovery Adventures Stretch Jacket Electric Pink

Best features

  • On all of my technical snowboarding jackets, they vent to have zips under the arms, though I’ve not come across them on a walking jacket before, so it’s really nice to have the option of greater ventilation on warm days.
  • There’s a nice amount of stretch to this jacket which makes it the perfect jack to scramble in. Climbing up trees, over rocks and through styles is made easy as the jacket moves with you and stretches when it needs to, making for comfortable movement, whatever you’re doing.
  • Plenty of secure pockets with zips including a chest pocket
  • Lots of adjustment options with the hood making it easy to cinch it in tight in really wet, windy weather
  • It’s warm without being bulky and is great at preventing wind chill

Craghoppers Discovery Adventures Stretch Jacket Electric PinkGood length to the jacket meaning it covers the bum nicely

Thank you to Craghoppers for supplying the featured product for me to test.

Brinscall to Great Hill – Walking in the Lancashire Moors

Circular walk, Brinscall to Great Hill

  • Start & End Point: Brinscall Swimming pool, PR6 8Q
  • Distance: approximately 5 miles / 8 km
  • Time Taken: approximately 2 hours
  • Elevation: 321 metres
  • Uphill: 1/5
  • Technicality: 0/5
  • Scenery rating: 4/5

Walk Summary

This is a superb gentle uphill walk, that provides incredible views in return for very little effort.

Walking Brinscall via White Coppice to Great HillThe single-track road leading from Brinsall car park up towards Anglezarke Moor

The Walk

Great Hill is in the West Pennine Moors, situated a few miles outside of Chroley and on a clear day it’s possible to see all the way to Welsh hills and the Lake District. It’s rare to get such far-reaching views from such a meagre climb, yet even on a dull overcast day, I found the views impressive.

Woodland on the way up

Parking up beside Birnscall swimming pool, I headed off up a single track road with beautifual woodland to one side, and sheep grazing in open fields on the other, heading up towards Great Hill.

Navigation is an absolute cinch on this walk, with clear paths that are easy to spot and follow, along with clear signage courtesy of the Ramblers Association.

Walking Brinscall via White Coppice to Great Hill

The path up to Great Hill is clear and easy to follow all the way

Although the walk is uphill, it’s gentle rather than steep, making it an ideal introduction for those wishing to start hill walking. For a lazy Sunday afternoon, at just 5 miles the walk was ideal, with enough uphill bits to require a little effort, but not enough to make the walk at all challenging.

If you fancy a longer walk, you could take the same route, but continue up to Winter Hill, which at 456 metres marks the highest point in the area.

Walking Brinscall via White Coppice to Great Hill

From the top of Great Hill the views, even on a dull day were stunning. When you reach to the top there are stone benches too, making it the ideal place to sit for a while and take a breather or simply to stop and enjoy the beautiful views.

Walking Brinscall via White Coppice to Great HillHeading back down from the Moor

This is a walk that I’m keen to do again, and is one that could readily be enjoyed numerous times; the landscape changing depending on the season and I love to return in the depths of winter with the moors covered in snow, all foggy and freezing. This was a great little walk I thoroughly enjoyed!

A Glorious Autumn Weekend of Glamping at Round The Woods in Norfolk

What did we think?

Having never been to Norfolk before and loving this time of year, I was particularly excited about our visit to Round the Woods. After leaving work early on the Friday we set off for Norfolk. 4 hours later, we pulled up at Round the Woods, ahead of schedule and were given a warm and friendly welcome by Kate, Seb and their adorable boys.

Round the Woods yurt glamping in Norfolk

We were accompanied to our yurt, twinkling with fairy lights, and Seb bought us a basket of breakfast goodies while Kate told us more about the site, facilities and Hazlenut, our yurt for the weekend.

Inside the yurt at Round the Woods
We quickly set about the important task of settling in, and once Inside, the 6 metre yurt felt enormous! As well as the double bed and two single futons there was a table and 4 chairs, along with an extremely well equipped kitchen. As we arrived late, it was nice to have somewhere inside the yurt to cook, and the little kitchen included a double gas stove and everything we needed to cook our meals. From essentials like plates and cutlery, through to little thoughtful extras like salt and pepper, tea, sugar and Rapeseed oil.

Inside the yurt at Round the Woods

The woodburning stove was incredibly effective at heating up the yurt. Although the weather was good as it was only early autumn, it was still chilly at night, so the woodburner got plenty of use.

The big surprise for us was that the top part of the woodburner was an oven, so after a day out exploring, we returned back to our yurt with food purchased at the local farmshop, and had baked potatoes for dinner – strangely decadent and all the more enjoyable for being under canvas!

Inside the yurt at Round the Woods

The bed was so warm and comfortable that I really didn’t feel like I was under just a single layer of canvas, and didn’t feel cold at all. The big skylight was a joy to gaze up at, even on the final day with rain pelting down, watching leaves blowing and the raindrops falling down was unexpectedly relaxing.

Both of the yurts at Round the Woods have their own eco loo; essentially a little wooden hut with composting loo and hand washing sink, complete with quirky little pictures hanging on the walls to give it a homely touch.

Round the Woods facilities in Norfolk

As well as the eco loo, a short walk up the field takes you to an ingeniously renovated shipping container, disguised beneath beautiful wood cladding. Inside there are two large and very well appointed shower rooms, as well as a fridge-freezer and mobile phone charging facilities. We loved the honesty shop that was full of locally sourced goodies, from Norfolk made chocolate to ice cream and fruit juice. Back at home I’m kicking myself for not indluging in a bar of Gnaw chocolate!

Exploring the woodland

We loved the location of Round the Woods. As you might expect with a name like that, the yurts are located in a small field right next to woodland that you’re free to explore and enjoy.

Shell and AListair

We followed the trails through the woodland on a particularly warm and sunny day, and it was a pleasure to be able to roam freely in such beautiful surroundings. A short walk took us to a pretty pond where we stopped for a while to admire wildlife and enjoy the sunshine.

We continued on and passed bee hives and stopped to watch the resident geese and chickens, before Mr CWS located the rope swing and I ambled back to the yurt to read a book in the hammock making the most of what was left of such an unexpecetedly warm day.

Out and about in the local area

For those looking to explore the area more fully, there are heaps of nature books and leaflets provided in the communcal area, full of information about things to see and do out and about.  Owners Kate and Seb were hugely helpful in terms of recommending local places for us to visit and we took their recommendation to visit The Fox at Lyng and enjoyed a delicious meal there with the friendliest locals I’ve ever encountered!

As well as wandering around Lyng and the surrounding woodland, we spent an enjoyable morning pootling around Taverham Craft and Country Shopping Centre, and the following day we stopped off at Elveden Courtyard to shop for local produce and have lunch before setting off home.

Kate and Seb pride themselves on providing a warm welcome and they did exactly that, and we had a wonderful time glamping at Round the Woods that we wouldnt’t hesitate to highly recommend it.

The best bits

  • Wonderfully well equipped yurts that stayed warm and cosy thanks to the fabulous woodburner
  • Great facilities inside the yurt including a kitchen area, table and chairs
  • Super comfy bed and warm duvet
  • The eco credentials of the site are impressive, with a Gold Award from Green Tourism
  • Breakfast baskets are a lovely touch and the bacon, bread and eggs (from the Round the Woods hens) were delicious
  • Beautiful woodland to wander around and explore
  • Great location, with lots of beautiful little villages, farm shops and plenty of visitor attractions close by
  • As a couple we loved it and thought Round the Woods was perfect for a romantic break, but families too will have a magical time here

Thank you to Kate and Seb for inviting us to stay at Round the Woods.
