After well over three years of design and development Jonathan Davies, the U.K based creator of LayBakPak, has launched a Kickstarter campaign and we couldn’t wait to tell you all about it. The clever new LayBakPak is a backpack…that’s also a bed. I know right? Amazing! Read on to find out more…
Creator of LayBakPack, Jonathan Davies is an outdoor adventure fan, with activities including hiking, fishing, canoeing, camping and climbing playing a big part in Jonathan’s life. The LayBakPak came about after many years of having to suffer the discomfort of sleeping on the floor of a tent or on the sand or shingle of a beach.
Jonathan has worked with a number of designers and manufacturers in the UK and moving forwards the intention is for most of the manufacturing to be carried out in his home county of Suffolk. So he’s hoping that British backers will head towards the Kickstarter page.
What Is LayBakPak?
LayBakPak is the only product in the world that combines a backpack with a bed. Uniquely the aluminium frame of the backpack converts to a full-size camp bed with an adjustable backrest. The frame can be released from the bag without having to remove the bag contents and converted to the bed in less than two minutes. See how fast the backpack converts to a bed here.
The bag can be used with or without the frame. The bed is very comfortable and users have enjoyed a good night’s sleep when out camping. With a LayBakPak you need never lie on the floor again or carry your bed in addition to your backpack. Plus your bed does not take up any of the bag space.
This could be useful for;
Camping
Hiking
Fishing
Trekking
Festivals
Beach
Another unique feature of this backpack is its shape and, in particular, its slim profile. This, allied to the frame, keeps your load close to your back and hips making it very comfortable especially with heavier loads.
The 65+ litre capacity allows you to carry all the kit you need- and your bed is always with you. The two large double-zipped front pockets make access to the main bag quick and easy. There is the facility to convert the main bag into two separate chambers. There are also four large side pockets, two smaller pockets and a rain cover pocket. The harness is well padded and has a height adjustment feature.

This is an easy flat walk from Haverigg following the sea wall up past Hodbarrow Lake and Duddon sands before continuing around the other side of the lake and back into Haverigg.
Walking on the beach
Due to a combination of bad weather and a flare up of my autoimmune condition, we decided to abandon our plans to scale Black Combe, and instead opted for a short 4.5 mile coastal route, detouring along the way for a spot of geocaching, before walking along the coast, then up and around the salt water lagoon before looping back around the other side of the lake to return into Haverigg.
Despite using the MyTracks app to map our route, for some bizarre reason, it recorded us as having walked twice as far as we actually did. Strange, as I use it a lot and I’ve always found it be highly accurate, so unfortunately for this walk, I can’t provide a route map or stats.
At the start of our walk we opened up the Geocaching app and after successfully finding one cache at the entrance to the Camping and Caravanning Club campsite, we then searched for a second nearby cache, but to no avail, only to check the app again and find many people had searched for the cache and concluded it was no longer there.
A Geocache found near the start of our walk
Undeterred, we then made the most of the low tide, which gave us a chance to fly my much loved Flexifoil Sting power kite. The wind conditions were ideal and gave consitent clean air – absolutely perfect flying conditions.

After kite flying on the beach we then started the walk proper around the coast following the sea wall, up to a forlorn old lighthouse flanked on one side by Hodbarrow Lake, a salt water lagoon, the result of subsidence in the old quarry, and on the other side, the Duddon Estuary, with its Blue Flag beach and RSPB Nature Reserve.

We continued up the coast and climbed down to Duddon Sands, full of impressive rock formations with a big quartz seam clearly visibly running down from the rocks onto the beach.

Once reaching Duddon Sands, the walk continues around the far end óf Hodbarrow Lake, and we followed the path that provided some great views of both the fells and the lake, before continuing onwards and back into Haverigg where we returned to our Air B&B accommodation for a well deserved glass of wine.
The view looking back towards the coast from the far side of Hodbarrow Lake
This was my first experience of staying in Air B&B accommodation and I have to admit to being impressed. Whilst the decor of our weekend rental wasn’t my usual preferred interior style, it was warm, cosy and made a great base for our weekend away. I’d feared that I’d feel a bit like a home invader, but whilst it felt homely, it didn’t feel too personal or weird!
The path around the other side of Hodbarrow Lake, leading back into Haverigg
This was another great weekend spent outdoors on the coast, in an area of the Lake District that remains much less visited than other areas of the Lakes thanks to its more isolated coastal position, but it’s a wonderful area for a peaceful weekend outdoors with superb walking and wonderful scenery that is definitely worth a visit.

What I thought
Wow, where to start with this bag? Firstly, when I travel I tend to take a lot of stuff in my hand luggage so need a decent sized bag. There’s a huge bottle of water, a tolietry bag, at least 2 books, phone, power bank, cables, eye mask, spare change of underwear (I learned this the hard way after my suitcase went missing in the Maldives) and, well you get the picture. Traveling light is not my thing!
At the airport with my Trtl travel pillow attached to the bag
The Mia Tui cabing bag is big and can be used as a regular handbag, or you can use the strap to wear it as a shoulder or cross-body bag (my usual preference when carrying a heavy bag). The inside space is really well thought out, with loads of different sized pockets, as well as a clear toiletry bag which means no more faffing around at airport security placing lipbalm and hand sanitiser gel in a plastic bag. Along with the clear cosmetic case, there is also a larger zipped bag, which with the addition of a second thinner strap, can be easily converted into an evening handbag.
The Mia Tui Jennie Cabin Bag attached to the handle of my suitcase
Having so many pockets inside meant I could keep my passport, phone and so on in their own little pocket, so I always knew where everything was. I’m terrible for having large handbags with so much inside that it often takes me a good minute or so of looking around inside before I can find what I’m after, but the Mia Tui bag makes being organised easy.
All of the internal pockets inside the bag
One really clever touch is that there is a strap integrated into the back of the bag which is the perfect size for slotting over standard suitcase handles, so you don’t end up having to carry the bag if you don’t want to. It just so happens that my new suitcase has a super short handle though, so I ended up just looping the handles of my Mia Tui bag over the handle of the case, but it fitted perfectly on my daughters standard suitcase handle.
On the plan with my bag
The verdict
This is a superb travel bag and with lots of different colours available it’s easy to find one you’ll love. I wanted to go for one that would go with anything which I why I chose the bronze colour. I’d normally choose silver, but it looked a bit too ‘white’ on the website, and the bronze turned out to be a really versatile choice.
If the Jennie bag is a bit too big for you, there is a smaller version called the Mia Tui Elizabeth cabin bag or the Mini Jen cabin bag. It is worth noting that usually I don’t like faux leather bags as I find they can look and feel cheap, but the Mia Tui Jennie cabin bag is great quality, it feels lovely and soft and doesn’t look like a cheap bag that’s pretending to be leather, it just looks like a good quality leather bag.

What we thought
Like most people we are keen to do our little bit to help cut down our use of single-use plastics, and avoiding buying individual bottles of water is a great start! This kind of water bottle is something I’m already familiar with having owned a Hydroflask in the past which I use when traveling and at the gym, however, if you want a sports cap is extra you have to buy that seperately. I really liked the fact that the Red Original water bottle comes with a regular screw cap and a sports cap too which makes it much easier to drink from, for example when you’re on the treadmill.
I took this on holiday with me recently and found it brilliant for keeping my water cold during the long journey, and for taking out and about with me on walks, and on the various trips I did. I went on several dives whilst I was away and being able to reach into my bag after a dive and gulp down nice cold water in the blazing sunshine was great!
Looks wise, the simple stainless finish should appeal to all, and I liked the loop on the cap too, though occasionally I did find the screw cap a bit temperamental; bascially you just have to make sure you’ve lined it up and don’t try to put it on at a slight angle like I did!
This is a lovely looking and robust flask that makes it much easier to carry water with you, making it less likely you’ll need to resort to buying bottled water. I’ve also kept it on my desk at work to encourage me to drink more water and becuase it stays cool all day, I’ve found it really helps me drink more.
For travel in particular I think it’s really useful and the fact that it’s made out of marine grade stainless steel means that even with continued use and the bumps and scrapes I’m sure it will pick up over time, it will still remain in tip top condition.
It’s very light, so doesn’t add to much weight, for example when you are out walking, so it’s a thumbs up from me, and thanks to the lovely packaging (a nice looking cardboard tube) it would make a great gift for any outdoor lover.

What we thought
The presentation is abslutely lovely with two different designs to choose from, either blue polka dot or retro flowers and the first thing I noticed was the quality. I’ve had miniature first aid kits before that have been cheap and cheerful, with plasters that didn’t stick very well and flimsy cases, but the Yellodoor travel first aid kit is different.
The little wipe-clean case is really good quality and feels like it would last for many years of use, in fact the cases are so pretty you’d definitely want to reuse it when the contents have all been used, either by refilling with plasters etc as you use them, or putting it to use as a cute little makeup bag.
Inside, when you first open the case it doesn’t look like there’s much in there, but as you remove each item, you find more and more to uncover! I thought the addition of proper round-ended bandage scissors and slanted tweezers was a really good idea, and there wasn’t anything in there I didn’t think would come in handy at one time or another.
As well as it being perfect for camping, it’s ideal for travel too. If you have kids especially, keeping one of these kits in the glove box makes a lot of sense, and for camping I’ve added mine to my always-packed camping essentials box alongside things like duck tape and cable ties.
The verdict
This is a brilliant value little first aid kit, I love the design of the little cases which are not only really good quality, but they look good enough to use as a makeup bag once the contents have all been used, or of course you could just refill it with plasters etc as needed.
A handy little first aid kit like this should be on ever campers essentials list, and this one is small enough to keep in your camping essentials box or to keep with you in the glove box of the car.
