Keen leaf-peepers – as the fans of fall colours are known – can save their money this year, because research has shown that, due to the combination of 2016’s wet spring, followed by above average amounts of sunshine, and, more recently, a warm and sunny August and September, trees around the country are set to put on a particularly spectacular display of their own. For the first time in several years, we’ll have something to be rather proud of!
DID YOU KNOW? Referring to Autumn as Fall isn’t an Americanism, as many people wrongly believe. It’s said to be a shortened version of “fall of leaves” and can be traced back to 16th century England.
As a result, using data from the Met Office, and with help from Andrew Smith, the Forestry Commission’s Director at Westonbirt, the National Arboretum, wood-burning stove specialist company Glowing Embers has put together an infographic.
The infographic below reveals roughly which parts of the UK should experience the best autumn colours, due to their specific weather conditions. They trawled through 30 years of weather data- looking at historical statistics for rainfall, temperature and sunshine hours on a regional level and compared them to 2016 statistics to find the results.
Where to head in the UK
When it comes to the four countries that make up the UK, the place to head to, to see the most vibrant shades, is…Wales. Already known for its beautiful scenery and landscapes, it can now add lovely leaves to its list of reasons to come and visit. The second best place to see handsome hues is predicted to be Scotland.
And if we narrow the results down further into regions, the very best places Glowing Embers has pinpointed as the area to check out for the most stunning hues, is, jointly, NW England and N Wales. You’ll be able to see marvellous shades in Manchester, cheerful colours in Cumbria, terrific tints in Bangor, and some cool chroma in Caernarfon.
