My Visit

I left early on Saturday morning and enjoyed a hassle-free drive from Cheshire down to Saint Austell, arriving by mid afternoon in blazing sunshine and freezing temperatures. Getting out of the car to check in at reception, the first thing that struck me was the sound of birdsong followed by the vast sweeping views out over the coast.

I was checked in by Lesley who was cheery and welcoming, and directed to Caerhays which was situated right behind the reception building. A few minutes later I’d settled in and had a look around to find two double bedrooms, a great size bathroom, spacious living/dining room and a lovely modern kitchen with full size fridge freezer, washing machine and even a dishwasher.

The interior of the bungalow is furnished to a very high standard and it felt light and airy. With decking running around the front and side of the bungalow, I could imagine it being a wonderful location to enjoy a summer barbecue or an evening drink al fresco.

I always like to cook when I am staying away, and the kitchen was big and equipped with everything I needed to cook full meals from scratch, and although it was just me on my own, I noted that the cupboards were packed full of ample crockery, pots, pans etc. so cooking for the whole family would be a doddle.

The bungalow was spacious, yet warm and cosy and it genuinely felt like a welcoming home from home. As is so often the case, I wished that I could have stayed for longer.

The site itself had a lovely chilled out vibe with lots of mature trees scattered throughout the grounds, and the other guests I passed whilst out walking were lovely and friendly too. As far as sites go, they don’t get much better than this!

Out and About

I’d been wanting to visit The Lost Gardens of Heligan for years, but each time I’ve visited Cornwall, I’ve always ended up staying too far away, this time however, I couldn’t have been closer!

It took just 5 minutes from leaving the front door of Caerhays to enter the gardens, and even in February, when most gardens are far from at their best, there was plenty to see thanks to some ingenious landscaping and magical sculptures. If you’ve never been I’d thoroughly recommend it and the tea room too which does great cakes, including Gluten Free options.

As well as visiting The Lost Gardens of Heligan, I spent the morning at the closest beach, Pentewan Sands. With the temperature hovering around the zero degree mark, with wind chill factored in, I think the temperate on the beach was easily -10. Seriously cold, though thankfully I’d layered up sufficiently.

I’d planned on flying my 4m Flexifoil kite, but it was much too windy to fly safely and I didn’t want to risk a dislocated shoulder, so instead I enjoyed a bit of beach combing and also managed to get a few great atmospheric shots.

As is so often the case time ran out before I’d managed to tick off everything off me to-do list, but on the up side, I still have plenty of reasons to return to the region again!

The Verdict

The quality of the Caerhays accommodation is superb, head and shoulders over the usual static caravan type accommodation that’s typically available on a family holiday park. All of the park staff I spoke to were super friendly and helpful and the park itself is beautifully landscaped with a great kids play area and coastal views from some pitches.

The size and cost of Caerhays makes it perfect for family holidays, just remember to take your usual self-catering basics with you, though there is a small shop on site, and there’s also a superb farm shop a very short walk away too.

Final Thoughts

  • Heligan Caravan & Camping site is a beautiful little site with big spacious touring pitches and it’s beautifully well kept.
  • There’s a superb farm shop within easy walking distance which I highly recommend visiting.
  • The site is literally right next to the Lost Gardens of Heligan, so this is the perfect place to stay if you’re planning on visiting the gardens.
  • Lovely region with some superb beaches and places like Wheal Cotes and the Eden Project not too far away.
  • The accommodation is spacious and very well equipped and provides outstanding value for money, making it perfect for a family holiday.
